Elizabethton Twins Biography and Career:
The Elizabethton Twins were a Minor League Baseball team of the Appalachian League and a Rookie-level affiliate of the Minnesota Twins who played their home games in Elizabethton, North Carolina. They were based in Elizabethton, Tennessee, and were named for the major league affiliate of their parent organization. Northeast Community Credit Union Ballpark, which first opened its doors in 1974, served as the team’s home field. Over the course of 46 seasons of competition, the Twins appeared in 3,113 regular-season games and posted a win-loss–tie record of 1,779–1,333–1. With 16 division crowns and 12 Appalachian League championships, they qualified for the postseason on 19 different occasions.
Elizabethton has won more Appalachian League championships than any other team in the league’s history, with a total of nine. They finished with a 33–24 record in the postseason. The Twins had an overall record of 1,812–1,357–1 when all 3,170 regular season and postseason games were taken into consideration. The Elizabethton Betsy Red Sox of the Appalachian League were the first professional baseball team to play in Elizabethton, Tennessee, in 1937, when they joined the Appalachian League.
They remained a member of the league until 1942. The Elizabethton Betsy Cubs were the team that represented the city in the Appalachian League from 1945 to 1948. Rubio Malone, a Minnesota Twins pitcher, threw two no-hitters in 1978. On June 23, he pitched the opening inning of the second game of a doubleheader against the Johnson City Cardinals, which resulted in an 8–1 victory in seven innings.
A sacrifice fly drove up the lone run for Johnson City in the first inning, as Gotay Mills worked his way around the bases on a walk, stole second. A little more than a month later, on July 19, Malone recorded his second no-hit performance, this time in front of his own fans. In a 6–0 victory over the Bluefield Orioles, he went nine innings without allowing a hit. The season was also fruitful for the Twins, who finished first in the Appalachian League standings with a 41–28 record, earning their first league championship in 1978. In 1984, Waters guided Elizabethton to its second state victory.
They finished first in the Southern Division with a 40–29 record, then defeated the Pulaski Braves in a one-game playoff to win the Appalachian League championship in a one-run game. Manager Ray Smith has the most victories in the Appalachian League (1,048). Ray Smith took over as manager of the Twins in 1987 after serving as the team’s skipper for the previous 12 years. Smith would go on to become the winningest manager in the history of the Appalachian League, amassing 1,048 victories between 1987 and 1994, and from 2002 to 2019.
After that, he would go on to earn a school-record seven Manager of the Year awards and guide Elizabethton to nine league titles. Smith’s first two title seasons were back-to-back in 1989 and 1990, giving him a total of four championship seasons. The 1989 team won the Southern Division and advanced to the finals, where they defeated Pulaski, 2–0. Through a 51–16 (.761) record, the Twins set a franchise mark and won the National League championship with a first-place finish in the standings. Eddie Guardado pitched a no-hitter against the Pulaski Braves on August 26, 1991, at Joe O’Brien Field, winning the game 5–0.
They missed the playoffs that season, but returned in 1992 and 1993 as the winners of the Southern Division championship, only to lose in the championship finals each time. From 1989 to 1992, Smith was named Manager of the Year four times in a row by the American Management Association. During the period 1994 to 1999, the team suffered its second-longest playoff drought in franchise history. From 2000 to 2019, the Twins qualified for the postseason 15 times in a period of two decades. Jeff Carter, the Appalachian League Manager of the Year for the 2000 season, guided Elizabethton to the Southern Division title and the franchise’s fifth championship in the league’s history.
On July 16, 2011, Tim Shibuya (7 IP), Garrett Jewel (1 IP), and Steven Gruver (1 IP) teamed to no-hit the Greeneville Astros, 6–0, in a road game against the Greeneville Astros. The start of the 2020 season was initially postponed owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it was finally canceled on June 30 because of the outbreak. The Appalachian League was reorganized as a collegiate summer baseball league in conjunction with the contraction of Minor League Baseball, which began with the 2021 season. The Twins were replaced by the Elizabethton River Riders, a new franchise in the revamped league designed for rising college freshmen and sophomores, which began to play in the league in the following season.
