Ellie Simmonds Biography and Career:

With her participation in the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, Ellie Simmonds became the second-youngest Paralympian in British history to win a medal of any color. She was just 13 at the time of her competition.

Aside from the fact that she went on to win two gold medals in her first Games, and that she lives by the basic idea of “work hard and be yourself,” she has garnered the admiration of the British people. As a result of her accomplishments, she was named BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year in the same year she won the championship.

Earlier that year, she became the youngest person in history to be made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), and later that year, she competed in the IPC Swimming World Championships Short Course in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she won six gold medals and one silver medal.

With achondroplasia (dwarfism) as a birth defect, Simmonds built on her previous triumphs in 2008 and 2009 by winning four gold medals, one silver medal, and one bronze medal at the 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Simmonds competed at the 2011 IPC Swimming European Championships in Berlin, where she went head-to-head with her Dutch competitor Miriam de Koning-Peper and came away with two gold medals, one silver medal, and one bronze medal.

When she arrived in London, she was one of the ‘poster ladies for the Games, and owing to the generosity of one of her sponsors, a gigantic picture of Simmonds was projected along the side of one of the buildings overlooking Olympic Park. Despite the great pressure she was under, she delivered in front of her home audience, winning two gold medals, one silver medal, and one bronze medal in the process. In addition, she set two world records.

Queen Elizabeth II bestowed the Order of the British Empire upon her in the New Year’s Honours list of 2013 for her services to the country. After winning three gold medals and one bronze in the 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships in Montreal, Canada, her swimming prowess carried over into the next year.

Until Simmonds suffered a defeat in the 400m freestyle at the 2015 World Championships in Glasgow, Great Britain, she had not lost the event at a Worlds or Paralympic Games since 2008. That all changed owing to the performance of Ukraine’s Yelyzaveta Mereshko, who made her World Championships debut by defeating Simmonds in a dramatic final and going on to win two further gold medals. Simmonds was unable to reclaim the top spot in the 2016 IPC Swimming Europeans in Funchal, Portugal, where she finished with one silver and three bronze medals.

In Rio 2016, however, the Briton demonstrated why people should pay attention to her by breaking the world record in the 200m individual medley by swimming in under three minutes for the first time (2:59.81) and won her fifth Paralympic gold medal in the process. In the 400m freestyle, she finished third, behind Mereshko and China’s Lingling Song, to earn a bronze medal for her efforts.

The delay of the Paralympic Games in Tokyo led her to rethink her plans for the future. She had hoped to retire from competitive swimming after the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. “Originally, my intention for this summer [2020] was to participate in the Games and then retire. Now I’ll focus on the next year [2021] and the city of Tokyo. I’m not sure what my plans are for the future beyond Tokyo, but I’d want to work with children in another country in the future.

It’s possible that I’ll teach English in a foreign country. That is exactly what I would want to accomplish. Swimming will always be a favorite pastime of mine, no matter when I decide to retire in the future. I love it because it has brought me so much pleasure, given me some of the finest colleagues on the planet, and provided me with experiences that I will cherish forevermore.” The BBC reported on April 28, 2020; palatinate.org.uk reported on March 6, 2020; and British Swimming reported on May 22, 2020.

According to her, after the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, she found it difficult to sustain her enthusiasm for swimming and pondered giving up the sport. While on leave, she traveled around Asia, Australia, and the United States of America before relocating to London, England, where she rejoined old coach Billy Pye and his team. “Swimming, and everything associated with it, was something I despised. It was only that I didn’t want to go back in the water.

I didn’t have any goals since I had done what I had set out to do. I needed to be away for a while in order to regroup and find out what I wanted to do with my life. It helped me develop a better understanding of what the sport means to me and rekindled my enthusiasm for it. Returning to the fold with Billy is a total blast. We push each other to our limits, yet we are all aware of what makes each of us tick.” According to the BBC (BBC.com, 30 March 2018; swimswam.com, 29 November 2019; inews.co.uk, 06 September 2019)

A non-executive director of the organizing committee for the 2022 Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham, England, was appointed to her position in January of 2019. It is my intention to put to good use all of the expertise and knowledge I’ve gained over the previous decade and to help make Birmingham the finest Commonwealth Games ever held in the United Kingdom.

She appeared in an edition of the BBC’s Celebrity Supply Teacher show in June 2020, during which she taught youngsters about the ocean and its biodiversity. She has served as an ambassador for Sainsbury’s Active Kids Holiday Clubs, which encourages children to be physically active and eat healthy over the school vacation period.

Also, a patron of the Dwarf Sports Association UK, an ambassador for WaterAid, and a Girlguiding leader in Manchester, England are among her many accomplishments and roles. 22 January 2019; 22 January 2019; 21 January 2019; 25 August 2020; 13 November 2020; 29 June 2020; insidethegames.biz, 22 January 2019; expressandstar.com, 22 January 2019; gov.UK, 21 January 2019; skysports.com, 25 August 2020; Facebook page, 29 June 2020)
