FC Dallas Biography and Career:

American soccer team Football Club Dallas, often known as FC Dallas, is situated in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex and plays in the National Soccer League (NSL). Major League Soccer’s Western Conference is home to the Sounders (MLS). The Dallas Burn, the club’s original name, was established in 1995, and the Dallas Burn officially joined the league in 1996. The team’s current moniker was chosen in 2004.

Since 2005, Dallas FC has played their home games at Toyota Stadium, a soccer-specific stadium with a capacity of 20,500. When Dallas first started playing at home, the Cotton Bowl served as the venue. The Hunt Sports Group owns the club, which is run by Clark and Dan Hunt, the team’s president. In addition to the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League, the Hunt family holds a stake in the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association.

On the same day that the Major League Soccer franchises for Kansas City and Colorado were granted, Dallas was given its own club in the league. The scorching temperatures and oilfield fires in Texas inspired the team’s moniker. Hugo Sánchez, a former Mexico international, was named the team’s first player on October 17. The Burn was first funded by the league, which was initially unable to find investors.

After beating the San Jose Clash in a shootout in front of 27,779 people on April 14, 1996, the Dallas Burn played their debut game. Jason Kreis scored the first goal for the squad in a 3–0 triumph against the Wizards five days later. The Burn finished second in the Western Conference, one point behind the Los Angeles Galaxy, with a record of 17–15. They were beaten in the best-of-three playoff semi-finals by the Wiz in a shootout after losing the first two games.

After a 2–3 home loss to D.C. United in the quarterfinals of the US Open Cup, they were eliminated from further competition. The Burn returned to the playoffs in their second season but were defeated by the Colorado Rapids in the conference finals. They defeated MLS Cup winners D.C. United later that year to win their first U.S. Open Cup.

Kreis, a striker, was selected as the league’s MVP in 1999 after scoring 15 goals and dishing out 15 assists in a single season for the first time. With a 3-2 loss to Los Angeles in the Conference Finals, the season ended in defeat. Despite leading the club to its sixth straight postseason appearance in October of 2000, head coach Dave Dir was sacked.

On September 11, 2001, Dallas fell to Jeffries’ previous squad in a playoff semifinal that was cut short due to the terrorist attacks. Burn games were moved to Dragon Stadium in Southlake, a Fort Worth suburb, in 2003 because of the Cotton Bowl’s capacity. Jeffries was sacked in September 2003 after the team’s dismal performance that year. Colin Clarke, a former Northern Ireland international, was brought in as a temporary replacement. Only two clubs had qualified for the playoffs in each of the previous seven seasons for the franchise.

Once again, the team played in the Cotton Bowl in 2004, under the leadership of Clarke, who was designated the club’s permanent head coach. Club owner Lamar Hunt said in August that FC Dallas will be re-branded and renamed as “FC Dallas” for the 2005 season to coincide with their new soccer-specific stadium in Frisco.

As a striker for Los Angeles Galaxy, Carlos Ruiz had scored 50 goals in 72 games and was named MVP of the 2002 MLS Cup after leading the Galaxy to victory. FC Dallas signed him in March 2005. Against the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, FC Dallas played their first game at Pizza Hut Park and came away with a 2–2 draw.

Dallas, who finished second in the Western Conference behind the San Jose Earthquakes, made the playoffs for the first time in two seasons, falling to Colorado in the conference semifinals on penalties, with Roberto Mia’s attempt being saved by Joe Cannon. Steve Morrow has taken his place.

An aggregate 4–2 loss to Houston Dynamo, a neighboring Texas club, in the 2007 MLS Cup final halted Houston’s third straight postseason campaign. First time since 1997 that Dallas has made it to the US Open Cup finals, losing to the Galaxy and the New England Revolution by one goal each time. Dallas failed to make the MLS playoffs for the next two seasons. Schellas Hyndman took Morrow’s position in the 2008 season. Bryan Leyva became the club’s first Homegrown Player in 2009 when he was signed from the club’s development program.

It was in 2010 when Dallas made their MLS Cup debut but lost 2–1 in extra time to Colorado following an own goal by George John. The last remaining original MLS clubs appeared in the MLS Cup finals with them: New York Yankees David Ferreira, an on-loan Colombian midfielder, was named MLS Player of the Year, and Hyndman was named MLS Coach of the Year.

The 2011–12 CONCACAF Champions League was Dallas’ first appearance in the main continental event after becoming runners-up in the MLS Cup. After a win against Alianza F.C. of El Salvador in the preliminary round, they advanced to the group stage. At the Estadio Olimpico Universitario, Marvin Chávez’s goal gave Dallas the first MLS club to win an away match in the Champions League against a Mexican team in the group stage.

The squad followed this up with a win against Toronto FC by the same score, but they were ousted from the tournament after failing to win any of their remaining four games and finished third in their group. Having failed to reach the postseason for the second straight year in his role as head coach, Hyndman stepped down from his position in October 2013.

Carlos Pareja, a former Dallas player, and an assistant coach was announced as Hyndman’s successor after resigning from the Colorado Rapids after two seasons as head coach. In 2014, Pareja guided the team to the playoffs. In 2015, Dallas won the Western Conference Championship. Only to lose to Portland in the Western Conference final, they beat Seattle Sounders FC in the conference semis.

They were rewarded with a place in the Champions League for the 2016–17 season after a strong performance in the regular season. Their first Supporters’ Shield and second U.S. Open Cup victories were achieved in 2016. They played the Sounders in the conference semifinals for the third time in a row, and this time they lost 4–2 on aggregate.

Dallas had made it through the group stage and into the knockout stages of the Champions League for the first time in their history. Hirving Lozano scored a late goal in overtime to send Pachuca through to the finals in their home and away semi-final series.
