American actress, rapper, and novelist Felicia Pearson was born on May 18, 1980. She portrayed Felicia “Snoop” Pearson on The Wire and revealed details of her traumatic life and time spent in jail for second-degree murder in her novel Grace After Midnight, published in 2007.

The daughter of two drug addicts who were incarcerated, Pearson was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and reared in an East Baltimore foster home. She was expected to die when she was born prematurely and weighed only three pounds.

She had to be fed with an eyedropper until she could be fed normally because she was so little. According to her autobiography, Grace After Midnight, she only sometimes interacted with her biological parents, whose mothers were crack addicts and whose father was an armed robber.

She consequently made the decision to use the last name of her foster family. As a young girl, Pearson worked as a drug dealer because she was a tomboy from an early age. After shooting a girl called Okia Toomer at the age of sixteen, she was found guilty of second-degree murder and given two consecutive sentences of eight years in the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women in Jessup, Maryland.

After 6.5 years, she was finally freed. When Arnold Loney, a neighbourhood drug dealer who watched out for her and provided her money to be imprisoned, was shot and killed when Pearson was eighteen, Pearson claimed that her life took a turn for the better.

Because she made him think of Charlie Brown’s beagle Snoopy from the comic strip Peanuts, he gave her the moniker “Snoop.” Pearson completed her GED while serving time. After being freed in 2000, she found a local job making car bumpers but was let go after two weeks when her employer discovered she had a criminal record.

Pearson and sixty other people were detained and charged with narcotics charges on March 10, 2011. After a five-month DEA operation, the arrest was made in the early hours of the morning at her Baltimore residence.  Because of Pearson’s acting talent, the judge at the first hearing after her arrest denied her bail, saying:

“I have watched the episodes of The Wire in which you have appeared, so you can change your appearance. I’m not referring to the jumpsuit; rather, I’m referring to how you generally appear. You look significantly different than you do here now.” Pearson was given a $50,000 bail offer on April 8, 2011, following a month in custody.

The day before her trial was scheduled to begin in August 2011, she entered a guilty plea to the charges.  She was given a seven-year prison term that was suspended with credit for time served and three years of closely monitored probation.
