Felicity Kendal Biography and Career:
Felicity Ann Kendal CBE is a well-known English actress primarily active in the television and theater industries. She was born on September 25, 1946. Throughout her more than 70-year career, she has acted in a variety of roles on stage and in film; however, the part of Barbara Good that she played in the television series The Good Life in 1975 was the one that drew the most notice to her career.
Felicity Kendal was born in 1946 in Olton, located in Warwickshire, England. Laura Liddell and Geoffrey Kendal, who is an actor and manager, are her parents. She is their younger daughter. Jennifer Kendal, her elder sister, was also a successful actress. After spending her early years in Birmingham, Kendal moved to India with her family when she was seven. Her father was an English actor and manager who directed his repertory company on tours around India.
The group would play Shakespeare one day in front of royalty and the following day in harsh rural areas, where the audience would often consist of many youngsters. While her family was traveling, Kendal attended six different Loreto College convent schools in India. At 17, she became ill with typhoid fever in Calcutta.

She and Richard Briers starred as Barbara and Tom Good, a middle-class suburban couple who decide to quit the rat race and become self-sufficient, much to the consternation of their snooty but well-meaning neighbor Margo (Penelope Keith) and her down-to-earth husband Jerry Leadbetter (Paul Eddington). Kendal appeared in every one of the show’s thirty episodes, which aired throughout four seasons and two specials between 1975 and 1978. At the age of nine months, Kendal made her debut on stage as a changeling boy in a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She was carried on stage by her mother. She debuted on the London stage in the 1967 production of Minor Murder.
Her theatrical career flourished throughout the 1980s and 1990s when she forged a strong professional partnership with Tom Stoppard and starred in the initial performances of several of his pieces. Some of these plays include The Real Thing (1982), Hapgood (1988), Arcadia (1993), and Indian Ink (1995). This final one started as a radio drama; she was explicitly put into the part.
In 1989, she was recognized by the Evening Standard with their Theatre Award for her work in the productions of Much Ado About Nothing and Ivanov. When the play Humble Boy by Charlotte Jones moved from the National Theatre to the West End in 2002, Kendal was one of the actors who appeared in the production. In 2006, she performed as Amy in the production of David Hare’s play Amy’s View in the West End.
She debuted on the West End in 2008, performing in a production of Noel Coward’s play The Vortex. She served in the drama The Last Cigarette, written by Simon Gray, in 2009, and in Mrs. Warren’s Profession, written by George Bernard Shaw, in 2010. Both productions were first seen at the Chichester Festival Theatre before moving to the West End.
Chin-Chin is an English translation of Francois Billetdoux’s Tchin-Tchin written by Willis Hall. In October 2013, she toured the United Kingdom with Simon Callow in Chin-Chin. The same year, she led the first London revival of Relatively Speaking, written by Alan Ayckbourn and shown at Wyndham’s Theatre. In 2014, she portrayed the role of Judith Bliss in Noel Coward’s Hay Fever, which she performed in the West End after touring the United Kingdom and Australia.
She appeared with Maureen Lipman in a production of Lettice and Lovage revived at the Menier Chocolate Factory in 2017. At the Barbican Theatre in London in 2021, the revival production of Anything Goes included Kendal in the role of Evangeline Harcourt. Noises Off’s show was revived at the Phoenix Theatre in London in 2023, and Kendal featured as Dotty Otley.
Kendal was one of the readers of Edward Lear’s poetry on a specially constructed spoken word audio CD released in 1995. The CD brought together a selection of Lear’s nonsensical songs. Kendal’s first marriage, to Drewe Henley, lasted from 1968 to 1979, and her second marriage, from 1983 until 1994, ended in divorce.
Charley and Jacob are Kendal’s sons, and they are the products of her previous marriages: the first was to Henley, and the second was to Rudman. She parted ways with Rudman in 1991, but they returned together in 1998. Kendal’s upbringing was deeply rooted in the Catholic religion. She married for the second time at the time of her conversion to Judaism. However, she has claimed on the transformation, “I felt like I was returning to my roots.”
Her conversion took over three years, and she indicated that her choice had “nothing to do” with her spouse. Her husband was not a factor in her decision to convert. White Cargo, Kendal’s memoirs, was first released in 1998. Kendal’s response in 2010 to The Guardian’s question on whom she would invite to her “dream dinner party”: “Emmeline Pankhurst, Gandhi, Byron, Eddie Izzard, George Bernard Shaw, Golda Meir, and Marlene Dietrich.” The question was posed in response to Kendal being asked whom she would invite.
