Fred Smith Biography and Career:

FedEx Corporation was made by Frederick W. Smith, who is also the Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors. Smith was born in 1944 in the town of Marks, Mississippi. He went to Yale College and got his degree in 1966. As an undergraduate student, he did the early research and analysis that led to the discovery of the logistical needs of a highly automated society in the future. After four years in the Marines, including two tours of duty in Vietnam, he set up the first air-ground network for Federal Express.

The company started up in 1973 to serve the rapidly growing high-tech and high-value-added sectors of the economy, just as Smith had predicted. Since it was started, the company has grown into a global business that operates in more than 220 countries and territories. In his job as Executive Chairman, Smith works on how the Board is run and on issues that are important all over the world.

Sustainability, innovation, and public policy are some of these issues. FedEx’s operations include 714 airplanes, more than 215,000 vehicles, and 5,178 operating sites. At the moment, about 15 million shipments are sent out every day, and more than 550,000 people from all over the world are in charge of them. FedEx has gotten a lot of praise for its commitment to providing the best service possible.

FedEx has been on FORTUNE magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” and “World’s Most Admired Companies” lists over and over again. Time magazine has named FedEx one of the “Time100 Most Influential Companies.” The magazine also has FedEx on its list of the “World’s Most Admired Companies.” He is also a trustee for the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

While he was chairman of both groups, he was in charge of the United States-China Business Council and the French-American Business Council. Smith has been on the boards of directors for a number of large public companies, including Malone and Hyde (AutoZone), First Tennessee, Holiday Inn, EW Scripps, and General Mills. He has also been on the boards of directors for a number of charitable organizations, such as the Mayo Foundation and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

He used to be the head of the United States Air Transport Association’s executive committee and the head of the International Air Transport Association’s Board of Governors. Smith has won a number of business, academic, and community awards, such as the Distinguished Business Leadership Award from the Atlantic Council, and the Global Leadership Award from the U.S. -India Business Council.

Smith has a few honorary degrees as well. Smith has also been inducted into both the Aviation Hall of Fame and the Business Hall of Fame. As co-chairman, he was in charge of both building the United States World War II Memorial and raising money for the National Museum of the Marine Corps. Barron’s and Chief Executive both called him one of the best CEOs, and Forbes put him on their list of the “100 Greatest Living Business Minds.” Frederick Smith was born in Marks, Mississippi.

His father, James Frederick “Fred” Smith, started the Toddle House restaurant chain and the Smith Motor Coach Company. People know Frederick Smith for his work in the restaurant business (renamed the Dixie Greyhound Lines after The Greyhound Corporation bought a controlling interest in 1931). The younger Smith’s father died when he was only four years old, so his mother and his uncles raised him.

When Smith was young, he couldn’t walk because of a bone disease, but by the time he was 10, he was healthy again. He went to the Memphis Presbyterian Day School for elementary school and Memphis University School for high school. He started flying planes for fun when he was in his teens. The next year, in 1962, Smith went to Yale University. While he was a student at Yale, one of his economics classes asked him to write a report about overnight delivery service.

In the end, both of these groups chose him to be their president. In 1966, he went to college and got a bachelor’s degree in economics. During college, he became friends with George W. Bush and joined the same fraternity as him. Bush would later become the President of the United States. John Kerry, who later became a U.S. senator and Secretary of State, was also friends with Smith. Both of them loved flying, so they often went up in the air together.

After Smith got his diploma, he was given a commission in the United States Marine Corps, where he worked as a platoon leader and a forward air controller (FAC), flying in the back seat of the OV-10, for a total of three years, from 1966 to 1969. After two tours of duty in Vietnam, he was promoted to Captain and got out of the military on good terms in 1969. For his service, he got the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, and two Purple Hearts. In 1970, Smith bought the biggest share of Ark Aviation Sales, a company that fixes airplanes. By 1971, the company’s main business was trading old jets.

Smith started Federal Express on June 18, 1971. He used the $4 million he inherited (about $23 million in 2013 dollars) and the $91 million he got from venture capital (about $525 million in 2013 dollars). 1973 was the first year that the company began serving a total of 25 cities. At first, the company’s 14 Falcon 20 (DA-20) planes were only used to move documents and small items.
