Frederick Keys Biography and Career:

A collegiate summer baseball team in the Major League Baseball Draft League that competes in Frederick, Maryland, the Frederick Keys are named after a Frederick, Maryland, native. The Frederick, Maryland-based Keys are a professional baseball team. It was Francis Scott Key, creator of the “Star-Spangled Banner,” who was born in Frederick County, who served as inspiration for the brand. The team debuted a new mascot for the 2011 season, “Frank Key,” which is an abbreviation for Francis Scott Key. The mascot was presented at the start of the season. He became a member of the team’s current mascot, a coyote named Keynote.

In 2006, Maryland Baseball Holding LLC purchased the franchise from Comcast Spectacor for an estimated cost of $1.5 million. The franchise is currently owned by Maryland Baseball Holding LLC. The team’s home field is Harry Grove Stadium, which was built in the 1960s. The Keys were a Minor League Baseball team that competed as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles from 1989 to 2020 when Major League Baseball reorganized the minor leagues following the 2020 season. The Keys were known as the Keys from 1989 to 2020. Frederick was a founding member of the Blue Ridge League, which operated in Asheville, North Carolina, from 1915 to 1930 and was based in Asheville. These were the teams that won the league championships in 1915, 1921, and 1922, respectively.

They were known as the Hustlers, the Champs, and the Warriors. McCurdy Field, which opened in 1924 and took over for the Frederick Fairgrounds as a baseball facility, was the first of its kind in the state. After the Blue Ridge League disbanded in 1931, the city of Frederick would be without professional baseball for several decades, a time that would continue several decades. Although the team was originally based in Hagerstown, Maryland, it relocated to Baltimore in 1989 when the Baltimore Orioles decided to move their Class A affiliate to the city.

In exchange for convincing the then-Hagerstown Suns to relocate their club to Frederick, the city of Frederick promised the owners of the Suns a 4,000-seat stadium that would be finished in time for the 1990 season. As a result, the Keys played their home games at McCurdy Field, a Babe Ruth League ballpark, during the 1989 season, as they awaited the completion of the building of their new stadium. On the first day of the season, the Keys were defeated by the Durham Bulls in both games of a doubleheader on the opening day (including a seven-inning perfect game by Dennis Burlingame).

It was on April 11, 1989, that the Keys earned their first victory, defeating the Kinston Indians 3–1 in their first home game of the season.  Eugene Kingsale’s contract with the Baltimore Orioles was purchased on September 3, 1996, and he became a free agent the following day. Originally signed by the Baltimore Orioles on June 11, 2005, Jeff Fiorentino’s contract was purchased by the team in order to fill in for the injured Luis Matos in the starting lineup.  For the first four of the five series, the Kinston Indians were the opponents, with the Salem Avalanche serving as opponents in the final series, which took place in 2007.

In 1990, they won their first World Series title by defeating the Indians in a three-game series at Progressive Field. It was during the 2005 season that they won their second cup, defeating Kinston in a best-of-five series at historic Grainger Stadium by a score of three games to two. In 2006, they were swept by the Indians, going down three games to none in the process. The Avalanche defeated the Salem Avalanche in the season-ending series of the 2007 season by a score of three games to one. Their victory over Kinston in the 2011 series was decided by a score of three games to one.
