Frisco RoughRiders Biography and Career:
The Frisco RoughRiders (commonly abbreviated to ‘Riders) are the Texas Rangers’ Double-A affiliate. The 1st US Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, led by future US President Theodore Roosevelt, was called “The Rough Riders” by the American press during the Spanish–American War. Riders Field, originally opened in 2003, accommodates 10,316 fans. The RoughRiders have been a Texas League affiliate of the Rangers since 2003. A+ Central in 2021. Frisco has made the playoffs seven times. A division champion and a league champion. 2004 was their only Texas League title. Mandalay Entertainment purchased the Shreveport SwampDragons (formerly the Shreveport Captains) in 2001 from Tom Hicks, longtime owner of the Texas Rangers and the Southwest Sports Group.
Mandalay Baseball relocated them to Frisco, Texas, and renamed them the RoughRiders. The team would play at Dr. Pepper Ballpark, a new stadium, and be the Texas Rangers’ Double-A affiliate. On March 29, 2008, the RoughRiders defeated the Texas Rangers. Matt Harrison pitched a 2–0 7-inning no-hitter against the San Antonio Missions on May 18. A record of 84–56 helped the team win the first-half division title (43–27) and the second-half division title (41–29). They swept San Antonio to win the South Division but lost the title game 3–2. Manager of the Year went to Scott Little of Frisco. Five Frisco players were selected to the 2009 Texas League All-Star Game: pitchers Jumbo Daz and Kase Kiker, catcher Manny Pia, outfielder Craig Gentry, and first baseman Justin Smoak.
Former Rangers third baseman Steve Buechele led Frisco to a 38–31 first-half South Division victory over the Corpus Christi Hooks (7–3) at Whataburger Field. The RoughRiders lost 3-1 to the Midland RockHounds in the divisional round. He had a 10–5 record and a 2.78 ERA in 17 starts for the Texas League. Leonys Martin, a Cuban defector, joined the Rangers in 2012 and was assigned to Frisco.
Mike Bianucci, José Félix, José Ruiz, Tommy Mendonca, Renny Osuna, Adalberto Flores, Justin Miller, and Martn Pérez were all-stars in that year’s Texas League. Despite qualifying for the playoffs, Frisco fell to San Antonio 3-1 in the division series. The ‘Riders finished the regular season 79-61. On April 4, 2012, Yu Darvish struck out top Frisco prospect Jurickson Profar to start four scoreless innings in a 6–1 exhibition triumph over the RoughRiders at Dr Pepper Ballpark.
On May 18, Jurickson Profar, the youngest player in Double-A baseball, hit 29 consecutive balls in a 13–0 win over San Antonio. It stopped the next night, but his on-base streak lasted until June 2, when it hit 50 games (the longest in Minor League Baseball in 2012). Mike Olt blasted two home runs for the third time in as many games on June 3rd. Despite being promoted to the majors in early August, Olt led the Texas League in home runs with 28. Nine RoughRiders were All-Stars in the Texas League. Frisco won the South Division title against Corpus Christi 3–0, but lost the league championship against the Springfield Cardinals 3–1. The 2013 team went 70–70 but didn’t win either half of the season.
On June 16, 2014, Mandalay Baseball Properties LLC, owner of the Frisco RoughRiders, agreed to sell the team to Chuck Greenberg, CEO and Managing Partner of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, and RoughRiders President Scott Sonju. A group of local businessmen bought the RoughRiders and Greenberg became Chairman, CEO, and Managing Partner of the newly established Frisco RoughRiders LP. Sonju is a Co-Managing Partner and continues to run the RoughRiders under Greenberg’s guidance.
The club qualified for the playoffs by winning both halves (40–29 and 40–30), but Midland won the South Division by three games. The RoughRiders haven’t made the playoffs since 2015, including last place performances in 2017 and 2018. The RoughRiders joined the Double-A Central in 2021, as Major League Baseball restructured Minor League Baseball. They won the Southern Division in 2021 with a 64–55 record. In the regular season, only two teams with the highest winning percentages played for the league championship. Cole Winn was named Pitcher of the Year.
