George Lam Biography and Career:

Having been born on October 12, 1947, George Lam Tsz-Cheung, who is also known professionally by his surname Lam, is a veteran Cantopop singer, singer-songwriter, music producer, and actor located in Hong Kong. His career has endured for more than four decades at this point. Lam is responsible for producing the majority of his albums, writing a significant number of his songs, sometimes writing songs for other artists, and covering songs by other artists.

The vocal range of Lam is rather extensive, and he can interpret and sing a broad variety of musical styles. He is quite active in the process of organizing and designing his shows as well as the covers for his albums and CDs. He was the one who came up with the first Cantopop rap, which was named “Ah Lam’s Diary.” Additionally, he was the pioneer who created a medley that was ten minutes long and was called “10 Minutes 12 Inches.” This medley was created by stringing together many successful Cantopop songs.

In 2019, Lam put on a show that was similar to a musical and used his songs to weave them together to create Lamusical. In addition to his work as a singer, Lam has also been in a few television dramas and has played the main part in several films. He had his very first film appearance in 1978 with the film Luckies Trio. In the 1982 film Boat People, directed by Ann Hui, he played a Japanese journalist, which is widely considered to be his most memorable portrayal.

Lam was born in Hong Kong to a family of physicians, with both his father (a Yuen Long obstetrician) and his paternal grandpa (a former hospital chief executive of Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital) being medical professionals. Additionally, Lam’s grandfather was a general practitioner. He was a boarder at Diocesan Boys’ School, which was a largely English-language boys school, after attending Tak Sun Primary School. Later, he attended the Diocesan Boys’ School.

During his time at the latter institution, he decided to study French as a second language rather than Chinese. At an early age, Lam began to develop an interest in music. His grandpa brought him to the cinema regularly, both Chinese and Western films, to introduce him to film music. Additionally, his mother had a passion for singing and dancing, while his father used to like listening to music and playing the piano.

The continual presence of music in his environment sparked his interest in this particular art form. It was when he was a youngster that he first became interested in listening to music on the radio and he taught himself how to play the guitar. Lam moved out of Hong Kong in 1965 to continue his education in the United Kingdom. His exposure to a wide range of musical styles in those nations, which he experienced during this trip and his following stay in the United States, significantly extended his musical horizons.

When he initially arrived in the United Kingdom in 1965, he enrolled at Dover College, where he graduated as a Leamingtonian. Timothy Cobb served as the college’s principal throughout his time there. Ching Y. Wong, S.C., a longtime friend of his who was also a student at Diocesan Boys’ School, graduated from that institution as well. A little over a year later, he decided to enroll at the Barcode School of Coaching to be with his brother, Tony. Along with two other pals, he established a folk music group known as the Midnighters there. The month of January 2019 saw Lam make a repeat trip to both of the universities.

After completing his education in the United Kingdom, Lam stayed there for a few years to find employment. After that, he relocated to California, where he worked as a tennis instructor and also worked for a stock trading business. During this period, Lam began composing his songs for various musical projects. Almost immediately after that, he went back to Hong Kong to begin his career as a musician.

Lam began his career as a member of the band “Jade” as one of the main vocalists. He released his first album in English, titled “Lam,” in 1976, marking his debut as a solo artist. The year 1978 saw the release of his first album in Cantonese. In the year 1980, two of his songs, namely “In the Middle of the Water” and “Need You Every Minute” triumphed in the Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Awards.

Twenty-three of Lam’s songs reached number one on the RTHK Chinese Pop Chart during the decade of the 1980s, placing him in second place behind only Alan Tam, who had twenty-eight. His contributions to the Hong Kong pop music industry have included the introduction of a broad range of song types during his career, with many of his originals and covers becoming Cantopop classics. When deciding which songs to cover, he draws inspiration from a significant number of different sources. These sources include music from the United Kingdom, the United States, Continental Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Latin America, Japan, and other countries.
