George Russell Biography and Career:
George Russell was born in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, to father Steve and mother Alison. He was the youngest of three children, the other two being his older sister Cara and his younger brother Benjy. Having spent much of his childhood on and around karting tracks, as well as with his brother Benjy, who was also active in competitive karting, Russell began karting at the age of seven.
The son of a farmer, Russell grew up in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, and attended the Wisbech Grammar School before relocating to Milton Keynes at the age of 18 in order to be closer to his racing teams. He is a supporter of the Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club, just like his father. Even before the Formula One championship was determined, George Russell’s outstanding performance in Formula Two in 2018 convinced Williams that he was prepared for promotion to Formula 1.

Despite facing a tough competition that included Lando Norris, who gained his promotion to McLaren the following year, and Alexander Albon, who battled for the championship until the final round, he was able to assert himself.
His karting accomplishments include winning the 2012 CIK-FIA KF3 European championship with three wins from four starts, with a no-score after being knocked out by a competitor. In 2014, he made the transition to single-seaters. He came from behind in the penultimate round of the BRDC F4 championship to win at Snetterton and win the championship by three points over Arjun Maini, who finished second.
His previous week’s performance in the Formula Renault Eurocup, where he defeated newly-crowned champion Nyck de Vries to win the season finale in Jerez, was equally impressive. Russell was awarded the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award, capping off a great debut year in the racing industry. After a successful debut weekend in the European Formula Three championship with Carlin, it appeared that he could be a contender for the championship.
Russell won the second race of the season at Silverstone, but he has struggled to score consistently throughout the season. After winning his first F3 race on the same weekend as him, Charles Leclerc easily defeated him to the top rookie honours by the year’s end, with series veteran Felix Rosenqvist taking the title. Russell returned to F3 for a second season with new team Hitech, where he faced a significantly weakened field as well as the emerging power of Prema Racing.
When Lance Stroll won the season’s first race, it provided a clear indication of his ambitions, and by the fourth round, he and Prema were progressively asserting their dominance over the championship. Russell finished third in the standings after claiming a pair of victories. A switch to the Formula One support bill the following year resulted in more success and the attention of Mercedes, who hired him as a member of their junior squad.
Russell’s ability to convert pole positions into victories made him an appealing championship potential when he joined the top-tier ART team as part of a four-man assault on the GP3 championship. The year came to a close with a commanding 79-point lead over his three teammates, who were led by Jack Aitken. Russell not only made his Formula One test debut for Mercedes, but he also made his first official F1 race weekend appearances for their client team, Force India, as well.
While nearing the end of his stellar F2 career, Russell signed a multi-year contract with another Mercedes client, Williams, to drive in their cars. Russell remained with Williams for the third season in 2021, but following his Mercedes appearance, reports spread that he was being considered for a full-time drive with the reigning world champions. Russell did not comment on the rumours.
Russell became a regular in Q2 as Williams improved its vehicle to become the more competitive FW43B. He even made two appearances in Q3 as the team continued to optimise its chassis. He did himself no favours with Mercedes, however, when he collided with Valtteri Bottas at the Imola circuit. Two years after their previous point-scoring performance, Williams experienced a fortunate result in Hungary, as both drivers qualified for the championship. Russell failed to qualify for the second round of the playoffs at the first weekend of the season, which was unusual.
On race day, despite the fact that he had maintained his unblemished record against Latifi up to this point, Latifi was the one who brought him home in seventh and eighth place when Sebastian Vettel was disqualified. Russell, on the other hand, put on a show in Spa, when he astonished the paddock by placing his Williams on the front row during a weekend hampered by dirty weather.
Due to the torrential rain, a farcical race was held in which the pack toured around the track behind the Safety Car for three laps, after which half-points were awarded, with Russell taking home nine points for finishing second behind Max Verstappen. Soon after, it was revealed that he had been named as Bottas’ replacement for the 2022 season, alongside Hamilton, in the Mercedes stable.
