George W. Bush Biography and Career:
George W. Bush, full name George Walker Bush (born July 6, 1946 in New Haven, Connecticut, United States), was the 43rd President of the United States (2001–09), leading his country’s response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and initiating the Iraq War in 2003. George W. Bush became the first person since Benjamin Harrison in 1888 to be elected president despite losing the nationwide popular vote in 2000, narrowly defeating Vice President Al Gore in one of the tightest and most contentious elections in American history. Bush was a businessman who served as governor of Texas from 1995 to 2000 prior to his election as president.Bush was the eldest of six children born to George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush. George H.W.
He attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, from 1961 to 1964, the boarding school from which his father graduated. In 1968, he earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Yale University, the alma mater of his father and grandparents. Bush served as president of his fraternity and, like his father, was a member of Yale’s secretive Skull and Bones club; however, unlike his father, he was a below-average student who did not excel in athletics.
Bush filed for a pilot trainee position in the Texas Air National Guard in May 1968, two weeks before his Yale graduation and the expiration of his student draught deferment. Members of the Texas Air National Guard were less likely than regular troops to combat in the Vietnam War. He was promoted to second lieutenant in July 1968 and licenced as a fighter pilot in June 1970.
He applied to the University of Texas law school in the fall of 1970 but was rejected. Although Bush appears to have been absent from duty for at least eight months between May 1972 and May 1973, he was granted an early discharge in order to enrol in Harvard Business School in the fall of 1973. His questionable service record returned as a campaign issue during the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections.
Bush returned to Midland in 1975 after earning an M.B.A. from Harvard, where he began working for a Bush family acquaintance who was an oil and gas attorney, and later founded his own oil and gas firm. In 1977, he married Laura Welch, a Midland teacher and librarian. Following a failed bid for Congress in 1978, Bush concentrated on growing his business.
Bush was able to recruit numerous important investors with the assistance of his uncle, who was raising funds for Bush’s father’s Republican presidential candidacy at the time. The company struggled through the early 1980s until it was acquired by the Harken Energy Corporation in 1986, following the drop of oil prices. Bush was compensated with Harken stock, a consulting position with the company, and a seat on the board of directors.
Bush abstained from alcohol in the same year, shortly after his 40th birthday. “I realised,” he later remarked, “that drinking was crowding out my energies and might eventually crowd out my love for other people.” His decision was influenced in part by a self-described spiritual conversion and reaffirmation of his Christian faith that began the previous year during a conversation with the Rev. Billy Graham, a Bush family friend.
Bush spent 18 months in Washington, D.C., following the sale of his company, serving as an adviser and speechwriter for his father’s presidential campaign. Following his election victory in 1988, he relocated to Dallas and gathered a group of investors to purchase the Texas Rangers professional baseball team. Although Bush’s investment, which he financed with a loan secured by his Harken shares, was relatively minor, his role as managing partner of the team garnered widespread media attention and established him as a successful businessman. Bush gained roughly $15 million when his partnership sold the franchise in 1998.
Bush ran against Democratic incumbent Ann Richards for governor of Texas in 1994. Bush’s sale of all his Harken stock in June 1990, just days before the company reported a second quarter of significant losses, was a big topic throughout the campaign. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) conducted an inquiry into the possibility of illegal insider trading (trading based on information not available to the general public) in 1991, but found no evidence of misconduct. Bush won the race with 53% of the vote (compared to 46% for Richards), becoming the first child of a United States president to be elected governor of a state.
Bush expanded state spending on elementary and secondary education as governor and tied teacher and administrator wages and promotions to their pupils’ success on standardised examinations. His administration expanded the list of offences for which juveniles may be sentenced to adult prisons upon their release from juvenile incarceration and lowered the age at which youngsters may be tried as adults to 14.
Throughout his presidency, Bush drew international attention to Texas’s accelerated usage of death punishment in comparison to other states. Bush signed numerous tort reform legislation into law, including one that capped punitive damages and another that clarified the legal definition of “gross negligence.” Bush became the first Texas governor to win consecutive four-year terms when he was reelected in 1998 with nearly 70% of the vote (in 1972, voters approved a referendum extending the governor’s term from two to four years).
