Ghostface Killah Biography and Career:

Dennis Coles, who was born on May 9, 1970, is an American rapper who goes by the stage name Ghostface Killah. He is a famous member of the Wu-Tang Clan. Coles was born on May 9. After the band had attained its greatest level of commercial success in the early to middle of the 1990s, each member was free to pursue individual careers. The rapper known as Ghostface Killah got his moniker from a character in the kung fu movie Mystery of Chessboxing, which was released in 1979. GFK spent his childhood in the Stapleton Housing Projects on the borough of Staten Island in the New York City metropolitan area.

Ghost recounts the events of his youth in the song “All That I Got Is You,” which is an autobiographical account written by Ghost himself. He grew raised in a three-bedroom apartment by himself after his father abandoned him when he was just six years old. He raps about this experience. When he was a child, he lived in such poverty that he had to “Pluck bugs out of the cereal box.” He made his debut with the other members of the hip hop and rap supergroup Wu-Tang Clan on their highly acclaimed first album, 1993’s Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). Ghostface, a former roommate of Wu-Tang founder The RZA, was instrumental in the recruitment of the group’s other seven members and served as executive producer on all of the Wu-Tang Clan’s albums.

In 1995, Ghostface appeared as a guest star on practically every song that was included on Raekwon’s first album, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…, which was released by another member of the Hip Hop Clan. Additionally, he was involved in the composition of songs for the soundtracks of the films Sunset Park and Don’t Be A Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood. These songs would later appear on his first solo album, Ironman, which was released in 1996. The album, which opened at #2 on the Billboard 200, featured a more prominent soul influence (especially 1970s soul) than earlier Wu-Tang releases, and following albums by Ghostface would maintain this artistic attribute.

The album also had a more apparent influence from Wu-Tang. Later on in his career, Ghostface became well-known for his emotionally driven raps as well as his smooth steady flow. Earlier in his career, he was recognized for his fast-paced, almost indecipherable stream-of-consciousness hip hop rap. It wasn’t until 1996 that he learned he had diabetes, a disease that would significantly compromise his health in the years to come. According to the lyrics of “Trials of Life,” a song that Ghostface recorded in 2007 with fellow New York rapper Prodigy (who is also a sickle-cell anemia), before he was informed that he had diabetes, Ghostface believed he was suffering from a sexually transmitted illness.

The fact that he lost a significant amount of weight very quickly and the fact that many said he had “hit it raw aplenty” led to the formation of this notion. He would come back in the year 2000 with the sequel to Ironman, which was titled Supreme Clientele. The album’s song “Cherchez LaGhost” became a somewhat successful club smash, while the album’s more reflective track “Child’s Play” drew several parallels to Slick Rick’s style. Ghostface didn’t spend much time writing his follow-up album, which was greatly inspired by R&B and titled Bulletproof Wallets. It was released exactly one year after his album Supreme Clientele.

He scored another modest club success with “Flowers,” which featured guest vocals from fellow Wu-Tang members Method Man and Raekwon. However, the album would be received with lackluster sales and reviews overall. The chaotic single “Run” featuring Jadakiss and the more mainstream single “Tush” featuring Missy Elliott both contributed to an increase in expectation for the rapper’s debut album for Def Jam, which was also his first album under the more straightforward alias Ghostface. The Pretty Toney Album was released to the public for the first time in April of 2004. On the skit “Shark *****z (Biters)” from 1995’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… album, Ghostface and Raekwon “subliminally” dissed The Notorious B.I.G.

by making angry references to Bad Boy Records’ use of cover art motif from Nas’ debut album (a portrait of the artist as a child, although Big’s cover is of his then-infant daughter) for B.I.G.’s Ready to Die Nas makes a reference to this event in his song “Last Real ***** Alive,” which was released on God’s Son in 2002. In this song, he reveals the tensions that existed between Raekwon, Ghost, and Biggie. Despite the tension between the two groups, Biggie was a Wu-Tang Clan supporter. He worked with Method Man and The RZA on his first and second albums, respectively, and sometimes shared the stage with Ol’ Dirty Bastard. According to what Method Man would state in an interview with XXL in 2004, Ghostface and Raekwon “don’t like anyone.” On the other hand, Ghost has publicly praised Biggie on two of his more recent albums.

Additionally, the album Fishscale that Ghostface released in 2006 had a bonus track that contained the late B.I.G., as well as Raekwon. In addition, Ghost raps the following lyrics about Technique in the song “I Can’t Go to Sleep” off of the Wu-Tang Clan’s album The W: “Peace to Biggie, Tupac, Big L, and Big Pun.” In 2006, Fishscale and More Fish were both released, but not before his Theodore Unit released the album 718. Fishscale was a top ten smash in that year. The release date of the rapper’s always prolific album, The Big Doe Rehab, had originally been scheduled to coincide with the long-awaited fifth full-length album by Wu-Tang Clan, titled 8 Diagrams.
