Gloria Hunniford Biography and Career:

Gloria Hunniford was born in 1940 in Portadown, Northern Ireland. Her father, Charles Hunniford, was a newspaper advertiser. He was also a part-time magician and a member of the Loyal Orange Institution. Her mother, May Hunniford, was a stay-at-home mom. She was the second of her parents’ three children, behind an elder sister named Lena and a younger brother named Charles. She started singing when she was just seven years old, and the day before her seventh birthday, she made her first public engagement at Portadown’s Cloncore Orange Hall.

Before she was old enough to drive, she was already giving concerts across Ireland and playing in churches and schools. When she was nine years old, her great-uncle, who had moved to Canada, had informed her about the opportunities that lay ahead. He was moved by her singing and wanted to take her with him, but her mother forbade it. Don Keating was a cameraman for Ulster Television when Gloria Hunniford wed him in 1970. The oldest of their three children, Caron Louisa Keating, followed in her mother’s career path and worked as a television presenter.

The two youngest Keating brothers are Michael and Paul. In 1992, he and Keating divorced. She married her hairstylist, Stephen Way, in September 1998, and the two have been together ever since. Gloria Hunniford moved to Canada when she was seventeen years old. Upon reaching her destination, she was astounded to see that people from various ethnicities and religious origins could coexist peacefully; this was unheard of back home in the religiously divided Ireland. It served as a wake-up call for her.

After landing in Canada, she obtained employment as an accounts assistant at a military base, most likely with the assistance of her great-uncle Jim. Her coworker quickly set her up with a producer from a nearby television studio. She was given a fifteen-minute slot when she first arrived during which she had to perform Irish music. The next year, she was offered the chance to conduct her own weekly radio show, where she would play music chosen by the listeners while being backed by a piano, bass guitar, and drums.

Gloria Hunniford may have travelled to Ireland in December 1958 as a result of her association with Ulster Television, intending to return to Canada as soon as the holiday season was over in order to spend Christmas with her family. But at her father’s request, she joined Ulster Television, which had only recently been established in Belfast, beginning working as a secretary. Before being elevated to the post of production assistant, she started out her work at Ulster Television as a secretary.

She continued to play in concerts at this time, and starting in 1964, she started appearing in cabarets. Her debut album, titled “Are You Ready for Love?” was published in 1969. She was asked to appear on the BBC Belfast programme “Good Morning Ulster” shortly after that. Her demeanour so impressed the producer that he offered her a job as a presenter on “Good Evening Ulster” on BBC Radio 2. Because men dominated the news at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Gloria Hunniford was worried about her first day on the air at BBC Radio 2.

Her boss encouraged her by saying, “Remember that you are as good as any bloke sitting in this room, and you will take your position beside them,” to help her gain confidence. She had prepared a list of questions, but her supervisor tore it up and urged her to pay attention to what she was hearing. Along with learning to focus, she also gained a sense of self-assurance that helped her feel comfortable around all of her male coworkers. She did a good job of covering the 1972 bombing of the Abercorn restaurant.

It was a turning point in her career when Jimmy Young invited her to take over for him as a holiday cover on his BBC Radio 2 programme in 1982. Because of its enormous success, she became well-known all over the nation. She was awarded a permanent position at Radio 2 as a result of her popularity on the Jimmy Young Show, where she first had her own daily radio show in 1982. It took over the early afternoon time period that lunchtime had previously held for the following eleven years.

Gloria Hunniford made her television hosting debut on ITV’s “Sunday Sunday” in 1982, and she hosted 138 episodes before retiring in 1990. She appeared in various series like “The Noel Edmonds Saturday Roadshow,” “Blanky Blank,” “Call My Bluff,” etc. while she was hosting We Love TV from 1984 to 1986. She additionally hosted We Love TV. From 1998 until 2003, Gloria Hunniford’s daytime programme, “Open House with Gloria Hunniford,” was broadcast. It was broadcast on Channel 5 from Monday to Friday. In 2003, she participated as a panellist on two occasions for “Loose Women.”

In 2004 and 2005, she served as a special guest presenter on “This Morning.” 19 episodes of her “Heaven and Earth with Gloria Hunniford” programme broadcast in 2006–2007. The next year, she frequently participated in the “Through the Keyhole” panel. She hosted “The One Show” in 2009 as a correspondent. In November, she started co-presenting “Rip off Britain,” and she has done so ever since.

In this series, the hosts look into viewers’ complaints of being duped and then divulge some of them in an effort to get to the bottom of it and get compensated. She will have participated in 184 episodes of “Loose Women,” which she will host, by March 2020. Doorstep 999 (2012), The Traveling Picture Show (2013), Home Away from Home (2014), Food: Truth or Scare (2016), Get Away for Winter (2018), and so forth are just a few examples.
