Grace Tame Biography and Career:

A victim of child sexual abuse, Grace Tame (born c. 1994) is an Australian activist and advocate for other survivors. Tame was chosen Australian of the Year for the year 2021 on January 25, 2021. Grace Tame was born in Hobart, Tasmania, around the year 1994. Her father, the former Tasmanian cricketer Michael Tame, is the mother of her daughter.

Tame dropped out of St Michael’s Collegiate in 2013 and then re-enrolled at a different high school, according to his school records. She subsequently relocated to the United States, where she obtained degrees in theatrical arts and liberal arts from Santa Barbara City College. She now lives in New York City.

During her time at St Michael’s Collegiate girls’ school in Hobart, Tame had been diagnosed with anorexia, which she had first discovered when she was in Year 10. Nicolaas Bester, a 58-year-old instructor, groomed her when she was 15 and then sexually assaulted her on several occasions after that. Despite the fact that the school was determined to have had several opportunities to intervene, the abuse continued until Tame reported her assailant to the authorities.

Nicolaas Bester was arrested and convicted of the charge of “maintaining a sexual connection with a minor under the age of 17,” a felony that, according to Tame, should be renamed as it has been in other countries owing to the deceptive use of the term “relationship” to refer to child abuse. He was also found guilty of having child pornography and jailed accordingly.

Tame’s abuser was sentenced by Justice Helen Wood, who stated that Tame had been “particularly vulnerable given her mental state” and that her abuser “knew her psychological condition was precarious” and had “betrayed the trust of the child’s parents and the trust of the school in an utterly blatant manner.” Tame was suffering from an undiagnosed autistic spectrum diagnosis at the time of the mistreatment.

In 2017, social critic Bettina Arndt recorded an interview with Tame’s abuser, who claimed that female students were engaging in “sexually suggestive behavior.” Tame slammed Arndt for siding with her abuser, accusing her of being a hypocrite “Not only is the interview upsetting because it offers a platform to a pedophile, but it is also disturbing because it trivializes and laughs off his crime,” he claims. It’s not a completely honest interview.”

Tame was not approached by Arndt for her side of the story, and her name and photograph were published without her permission. Tame’s abuser had spoken publicly about the issue several times, but she was prohibited from doing so by Tasmanian law. After discussing how he sexually assaulted Tame on the internet, he was sentenced to a second prison sentence for the creation of child exploitation material.

Because of Tasmania’s Evidence Act, it has been unlawful to publish material that identifies survivors of sexual assault since 2001. The reality was that Tame and other survivors were barred from speaking publicly about their experiences, despite the fact that Tame’s abuser brazenly boasted about his crimes on social media. Tame’s case resulted in Nina Funnell, a journalist and sexual assault survivor advocate, joining forces with Tame to launch a campaign called #LetHerSpeak in partnership with Marque Lawyers and End Rape on Campus Australia, with the goal of overturning this law as well as a similar law in the Northern Territory.

Nina Funnell is a journalist and sexual assault survivor advocate. Celebrities such as Alyssa Milano, Tara Moss, and John Cleese, as well as leaders of the MeToo movement, lent their support to the initiative, which garnered worldwide attention. Tame came out for the first time in August 2019 after the campaign was successful in obtaining a court order on her behalf via the Supreme Court of Tasmania, allowing Tame to be free from the state’s gang statute. She was the first female sexual assault victim in Tasmania to get a court order allowing her to talk publicly about her ordeal with the perpetrator.

Attorney-General of Tasmania Elise Archer declared in October 2019 that law will be altered to enable sexual assault survivors to publicly speak out in response to the #LetHerSpeak movement, which was spearheaded by Funnell and included Tame and other celebrities. Archer also indicated that he intends to amend the language of the offense, stating that “the term relationship implies overtones of consent,” which he believes is inaccurate. The legislation will be modified in April 2020 to enable Tasmanian survivors to express themselves.

Having become a champion for others, Tame now focuses on educating people about grooming and psychological manipulation, and on eliminating the stigmas linked with sexual assault and other forms of violence. She has aided the Los Angeles Human Trafficking Squad in its efforts to better understand the process of child grooming. Tame believes that education should be the main method of preventing child sexual abuse rather than relying too much on reactions, which might.

“feed the unconscious assumption that child sexual abuse is simply a part of life that we have to accept in our society,” as it has been in the past. Tame is working to eliminate victim-blaming and normalize speaking up, and she believes that more uniformity between federal and state legislation is required. Tame was the leader of the Women’s March4Justice event in Hobart, which took place on March 15, 2021.

Tame and Brittany Higgins, a former Liberal Party parliamentary staffer and alleged rape victim, delivered a speech at the National Press Club of Australia on February 9, 2022, which sold out immediately and received extensive news in the press and on social media platforms. According to Tame, during her speech, a “senior member” of a government-funded organization had contacted her and, in a threatening manner, requested that she refrain from criticizing the Prime Minister in her outgoing Australian of the Year address, given the upcoming election. Both ladies were outspoken in their support for structural change, claiming that the time for dialogue had passed.
