Graham Brady Biography and Career:

Brady was born in Salford, Lancashire, England on 20 May 1967. He attended Altrincham Grammar School for Boys for his education. He studied law at Durham University and graduated in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. Brady was an engaged student in politics. For the 1987–1988 academic year, he served as Chairman of the Durham University Conservative Association (DUCA) and was one of six students selected to represent Durham at the annual NUS conference. Additionally, from 1987 to 1989, he served as Chairman of Northern Area Conservative Students and as a member of the Conservative Party’s National Union Executive Committee (1988–1989).

He was chosen to represent the Altrincham and Sale West parliamentary constituency following Fergus Montgomery’s retirement. Brady’s constituency is regarded as a safe Conservative seat, having returned only Conservative Members of Parliament throughout its existence. Brady won the seat with a majority of 1,505 votes in the 1997 general election. Brady was the youngest Conservative Member of Parliament elected in 1997, having been elected just before his 30th birthday; the next youngest Conservative Member of Parliament was Tim Collins, who was three years Brady’s senior.

Brady backed Michael Howard in the party leadership race that followed his election. Brady delivered his first House of Commons address on 2 June 1997. He served on the Education and Employment Select Committee and its Employment Sub-Committee from 1997 to 2001. From 1997 to 2000, he served as joint secretary of the Conservative Party’s Committee on Education and Employment. In 1998, he questioned then-Comptroller and Auditor General John Bourn over his decision not to release a National Audit Office report on the contentious Al-Yamamah arms transaction. Brady was one of just 13 Conservative Members of Parliament to vote in favor of an equal age of consent that year.

From 1998 to 2000, he served on the executive committee of the 1922 Committee. In 1999, he was appointed to the Education and Employment Select Committee and appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Conservative Party Chairman Michael Ancram. In 2000, William Hague appointed him Opposition Whip. Brady filed a complaint in February 2000 against Michael Evans, then-head of Trinity Church of England High School, for distributing anti-grammar school literature to parents in Altrincham, arguing that this violated rules prohibiting the use of public funds for campaign material – a complaint that was later upheld by Secretary of State for Education David Blunkett.

Brady would become the opposition’s spokesman on Education and Employment the following year. From 2001 to 2004, Brady served as vice-chair of the all-party Advertising Group, secretary of the all-party Cayman Islands Group, and treasurer of the all-party Egypt Group. Brady remained an opposition spokeswoman for Education and Skills under both Hague and Iain Duncan Smith until a second Conservative defeat in the 2001 general election. In 2003, he was appointed PPS to the Leader of the Opposition, Michael Howard, and in 2004, he was appointed opposition foreign affairs spokesman and Shadow Europe Minister.

He served on the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister’s Select Committee and its Urban Affairs Sub-Committee from 2004 to 2005. From 2006 to 2010, he served as vice-chair of the all-party Montserrat Group. He was appointed to the Treasury Select Committee in 2005 and to the 1922 Committee’s executive committee in 2007. Brady resigned as Shadow Minister for Europe on 29 May 2007 in protest of Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron’s opposition to grammar schools.

He told the BBC that “when forced to choose between a front bench position I adore and doing what I believe is right for my constituents and the many hundreds of thousands of families who are ill-served by state education in this country, there is only one option available to me in conscience,” and argued that “grammar schools in selective areas are precisely the motor that drives social mobility more effectively than comprehensive areas.”

Brady’s own constituency has preserved a selective school system rather than a comprehensive one. From 2008 to 2010, Brady served as secretary of the all-party Fluoridation and Infrastructure Groups. Since 2009, he has served as treasurer and vice-chair of the all-party Thailand Group and the Cannabis and Children Group.

From 2010 to 2012, he chaired the 1922 Committee. Brady at the Conservative Party’s 2011 national convention In 2013, he voted against the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013, citing worries that the item was not included in the Conservative manifesto and could jeopardize religious freedom. He voted for Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum. Brady earned a salary of £26,000 as editor of The House, the Parliamentary magazine, according to a July 2018 report.
