Graham Nash Biography and Career:

Graham Nash was a key figure in two major musical movements of the classic rock era. He began his career with the Hollies, a pioneering British Invasion band that defined a part of ’60s harmony-laden guitar pop. After leaving the band, he formed Crosby, Stills & Nash with Stephen Stills of Buffalo Springfield and David Crosby of the Byrds, a trio that ushered in the contemplative singer/songwriters of the 1970s.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducted Nash with both groups, but his career spanned decades. Beginning with 1971’s Songs for Beginners, he pursued a solo recording career, philanthropy, and photography. Despite his success as a photographer, which included Sotheby’s auctions, exhibitions, and publications of his own work, his musical heritage remained intact. Crosby, Stills & Nash’s defining work was Crosby, Stills & Nash, and Nash’s solo career was bookended by two of his best efforts, Songs for Beginners and This Path Tonight.

Nash began playing music as a teenager, picking up the guitar amid the mid-’50s skiffle craze. They performed consistently for a few years, gradually moving from skiffle to rock & roll. They called themselves Ricky & Dane when they tried to sound like the Everly Brothers, and the Guytones when they got Guytone electric guitars. In 1960, the Four tonnes were persuaded to join the Deltas, which included bassist Eric Haydock and drummer Don Rathbone.

With the addition of lead guitarist Tony Hicks in 1961, the group became the Hollies, a tribute to their main idol Buddy Holly. The Hollies’ first UK Top Ten hit came in 1964 with a rendition of Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs’ “Stay.” Later 1963 and 1964 British hits were covers, with “We’re Through,” written by Nash, Clarke, and Hicks under the pseudonym “L. Ransford,” coming out in late 1964.

In 1965, “I’m Alive” became the Hollies’ first — and only — number one British hit, and “Look Through Any Window” reached the American Top 40. “Stop Stop Stop” in 1966, “On a Carousel,” “Carrie Anne,” and “King Midas in Reverse” all in 1967. As a result of the success of his cooperation with Clarke on “Jennifer Eccles” in March 1968, Nash became disillusioned with the Hollies and desired to be fully acknowledged for his compositions. In California, he found similar spirits in David Crosby and Stephen Stills.

A trio featuring these two folk-rockers was created towards the end of the year. Rewind It was released in May 1969 and quickly became a hit for Crosby, Stills & Nash. The album’s singles — Nash’s “Marrakesh Express” and Stills’ “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” — didn’t chart, but it went quadruple platinum and reached number six on the Billboard 200. The group’s presence at the Woodstock Festival in August 1969 was as important to their popularity as the album’s monetary success. CSN had never performed live, so they decided to add a fourth member to round out their sound.

After some discussion, Stills’ former Buffalo Springfield sparring partner Neil Young joined the three. Young was in the ensemble that recorded Déjà Vu in 1970. “Teach Your Children” and “Our House” was chosen as singles, and while neither reached the Billboard Top 10, they became enduring era standards. Legends Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young toured in support of Déjà Vu in 1970, but by the time Nash assembled the concert memento Four Way Street in 1971, the trio had disbanded. In May 1971, Nash released Songs for Beginners, a solo album featuring Dave Mason, Jerry Garcia, and Rita Coolidge.

Songs for Beginners was Nash’s most successful solo album, going gold and reaching number 15 on Billboard’s Top 200, but he only released one in the 1970s: Wild Tales, which reached number 34 in 1973. Then, when CSN wasn’t active, Nash teamed up with Crosby. Their first album, Graham Nash/David Crosby, was released in 1972 and went gold the same year. Water-Wind Neil Young rejoined Crosby, Stills & Nash for a breakthrough 1974 stadium tour. After the tour ended, Crosby & Nash released two more studio albums, Wind on the Water (1975) and Whistling Down the Wire (1976), as well as a live CD.

By 1977, Crosby/Nash had reconciled with Stills, and the trio released CSN, which included the number seven hit “Just a Song Before I Go.” After their 1977 and 1978 tours, the trio disbanded, and Crosby and Nash’s friendship faded owing to Crosby’s developing substance addiction issues. Earth & Sky, a third Graham Nash solo album, was released in 1980 and reached number 80. Afternoon Because Atlantic insisted on Crosby’s participation, Daylight Again became a Crosby, Stills & Nash album.

Daylight Again was a hit because of Nash’s “Wasted on the Way” and Stills’ reworking of the Curtis Brothers’ “Southern Cross,” and the trio was able to tour regularly again, despite solo projects and personal issues. While CSN toured extensively, Nash continued to pursue photography, philanthropy, and musical projects. Innocent Eyes, his fourth solo album, was released in 1986. Young rejoined the band for 1988’s American Dream but declined to tour in support of it.

Without him, CSN released Live It Up in 1990 and After the Storm in 1994 and toured annually. Looking Ahead CSNY reunited for 1999’s Looking Forward and toured in 2000. In 2002, Nash relaunched his solo career with Songs for Survivors. Nash traveled with CSN for a decade before focusing on archival work, producing box sets of the trio’s solo work and their 1974 tour. After Nash published Wild Tales: A Rock & Roll Life in 2013, long-simmering tensions broke over in the group.

Early in 2016, Nash said he would no longer collaborate with Crosby, officially ending CSN. This Path Tonight, Nash’s first album in 14 years, came out the same day. Over Time… He published Over the Years in 2018, a collection of his best-known post-Hollies tracks, with a bonus disc of unreleased songwriting demos. In December of that year, Nash joined venerable indie rockers Yo La Tengo onstage for a Hanukkah gig. Nash helped organize a 2021 extended reissue of Déjà Vu that featured enough demos, outtakes, and other versions to fill a three-CD and two-LP box set.
