Grant Gustin Biography and Career:
Grant Gustin is an American actor, singer, and dancer best known for his portrayal as Barry Allen a.k.a. The Flash on The CW TV series ‘The Flash’. He began his experience on television with the series ‘Glee’, and then was cast in a recurring role in the programs 90210′ and ‘Arrow’.
Since he was a boy, he always dreamt to be a Broadway performer, ultimately performing in television and movies. He believes it got inverted since he already had his start on TV, and still wants to appear in Broadway musicals. However, he is happy with what he has done thus far. According to him, the chance to work on ‘Glee’ partially dropped into his lap since he was not actively hunting for it. A talented tap dancer, he had initially auditioned for a part as a tap dancer in ‘Glee’.
While he failed to obtain that part, he did leave an impact on Ryan Murphy, the show’s co-creator, who remembered him for the recurring character of Sebastian Smythe. Thomas Grant Gustin was born on January 14, 1990, in Norfolk, Virginia. His mother, Tina Haney, is a pediatric nurse and his father, Thomas Gustin, is a College Professor. He has an elder brother called Tyler and a younger sister named Gracie.
He began to tap dancing at the age of eight, after being inspired by the 1952 American musical comedy film ‘Singin’ in the Rain’. As a youngster, he loved to act out movie scenes with his brothers. He later began engaging in community theatre and worked in over 30 productions.
He attended the ‘Governor’s School for the Arts program in Norfolk for Musical Theater while he was still in high school. He also played frequently with Hurrah Players Incorporated, a theatrical troupe in Virginia, for about a decade.
He graduated from Granby High School in 2008. It was during his sophomore year in high school that he began coming to New York to attend plays and discovered that acting is a feasible career option for him. He then attended the BFA Music Theater Program at Elon University in North Carolina.
While at Elon University, Grant Gustin auditioned for a Broadway Revival Tour production of ‘West Side Story and was picked for the part of Baby John. He quit school in 2010 and acted in the play for a year.
During this time, he met his manager who secured him a position in ‘Glee’, the famous Fox TV musical comedy. He quickly traveled to Los Angeles to film for the television series. He plays the character of Sebastian Smythe, an openly homosexual member of the Dalton Academy Warblers, and appeared on TV for the first time on November 8, 2011.
Gustin, who has been interested in musical theatre since a kid, performed the duet ‘Smooth Criminal’ together with ‘Glee’ co-star Naya Rivera in January 2012. The song was part of the episode ‘Michael’ in the show’s third season and featured on-screen musical guests 2Cellos.
In May 2012, he worked on the television film for the Lifetime network, ‘A Mother’s Nightmare’, which was filmed in Canada. The same year, he earned a prominent part in the independent film ‘Affluenza’.
Between ‘Glee’ and ‘The Flash’, he had a cameo appearance in the television program ‘CSI: Miami in 2012 and acquired a recurring part in the 2013 series ‘90210’. In 2012, he also auditioned for the character of Finnick Odair in ‘The Hunger Games film series but lost the job to Sam Claflin.
He landed his legendary role of Barry Allen, a.k.a. The Flash, in September 2013. However, he first secured merely a cameo part in the other DC superhero series ‘Arrow’. He ultimately earned his own pilot, ‘The Flash’, which debuted in October 2014. He has won a key part in the forthcoming 2017 independent movie ‘Krystal’. He is expected to play opposite Academy Award winner Kathy Bates.
