Mexican filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer Guillermo del Toro (born October 9, 1964) are most recognized for infusing his horror and fantasy films with an emotional and conceptual complexity that is rarely seen in other genres of cinema. During his early years, Del Toro had a fascination with both film and horror fiction. At the age of sixteen, he began making short films, and he went on to study filmmaking at the University of Guadalupe in Mexico. Following that, he studied the technique of film makeup under the tutelage of famed film makeup artist Dick Smith.
Del Toro spent most of the 1980s working as a special-effects makeup artist, and he also cofounded Necropia, a special-effects company, with his brother. Prior to writing and directing his first feature picture, Cronos, Del Toro wrote and directed many episodes of the television horror series Hora marcada, which aired from 1988 to 1990. (1993). The film, which is about the consequences of a device that grants immortality, was honored with nine Ariel Awards from the Mexican Academy of Film, including those for best picture, best director, best screenplay, and best original story. It also won the Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival’s International Critics’ Week competition.
His next film, Mimic (1997), was an American Miramax production starring Mira Sorvino, which was released in 1997. It was followed by El espinazo del diablo (The Devil’s Backbone), a ghost story set near the end of the Spanish Civil War, which he wrote after the success of the first. Blade II (2002), which starred Wesley Snipes, and Hellboy (2004), which he also wrote, were two of Del Toro’s comic-book adaptations that gained considerable attention.
El laberinto del fauno (2006; Pan’s Labyrinth), an aesthetically stunning and conceptually intricate fantasy film written and directed by del Toro, was nominated for Academy Awards for makeup, art design, and cinematography, among other accolades. Following that, he co-wrote and directed Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) and the sci-fi action film Pacific Rim (2013), which proved to be more popular in other countries than in the United States, respectively.
