Hamish Macdonald Biography and Career:

Australian TV journalist and news anchor Hamish Macdonald was born on May 18, 1981. Macdonald served as the anchor of the ABC’s Q+A political panel discussion show from February 2020 to July 2021. He formerly held positions at Channel 4, ITV, and Al Jazeera English, among other networks.

After receiving a journalism degree from Charles Sturt University in 2002, Macdonald started a brief career as a Canberra political reporter for local network WIN Television. He relocated to the UK, where he worked as a reporter for Channel 4 and ITV.

Macdonald established a career as a news producer and reporter at Channel 4 News in the UK. He covered important issues including the London bombings and the Asian disaster. He provided live coverage for ITV and Channel 4 news. Additionally, he provided eyewitness accounts to the Australian networks ABC, Nine, and Seven.

Early in 2006, Hamish worked as a producer for Al Jazeera English, the English-language sister channel of the Arabic network Al Jazeera, at its regional office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He was appointed as a newscaster at the Al Jazeera English office in Kuala Lumpur in the summer of 2006.

From February 2020 until his final appearance in June 2021, Macdonald served as the host of the panel program Q+A on Australia’s ABC TV in place of Tony Jones. The show was directed by Macdonald as it switched from Monday night to Thursday. Viewership fell sharply during Macdonald’s leadership, from 411,000 at the start of 2020 to 280,000 a year later.

Only 224,000 metro viewers were turning in by April 2021, a further decline in viewership. After serving in the position for 18 months, Macdonald announced his departure, saying he was looking forward to “moving into a new opportunity” and continuing to work with the ABC.

Macdonald’s decision to leave the program was influenced by the harassment he encountered on Twitter while presenting Q+A, which led him to cancel his account in January 2021. In a similar vein, Lisa Millar, another ABC broadcaster, made the decision to leave the social networking platform in September 2021 as a result of the harassment she had been subjected to while hosting News Breakfast.

The incidents involving Macdonald and Millar raised awareness of the large volume of harassment and abuse of Australian journalists on Twitter and suggested improvements to the platform’s handling of the problem. Scots College is a prestigious school that MacDonald attended.
