Her first book, titled The Burden of Bad Ideas: How Modern Intellectuals Misshape Our Culture, is a compilation of eleven pieces that each investigate a different manner in which the feminist/multiculturalist paradigm has had a negative influence on contemporary society in the United States. A good many of these items were first published in City Journal, which is a journal that is produced by the Manhattan Institute. Following the terrible abuse of Abner Louima and Amadou Diallo, the New York City police were given diversity training. One article, titled “How to Train Cops,” provides a critical analysis of this instruction.

In his article titled “Public Health Quackery,” Mac Donald takes issue with the fact that contemporary epidemiologists no longer study individual risk factors like smoking, promiscuous sexuality, and drug use. According to Mac Donald, this is because it is considered to be the same as blaming the victim for their condition. Several of Mac Donald’s pieces include criticisms that are quite similar to one another on the loss of personal responsibility from public debate. The public welfare system, the Ford Foundation, the Carnegie Corporation, and other charitable organizations, among others, have been criticized for protecting the poor from the consequences of the actions they have made that have led them to be poor.

The Burden of Bad Ideas was described as “social, cultural, and political critique of the highest order” in an article that was published in the Washington Post Book World by Jonathan Yardley, a critic. Are Police Officers Racist? The Ways in Which the Fight Against the Police Is Harmful to African-Americans, Mac Donald goes back to her research on the interactions between the police and racial and ethnic minorities. She suggests that minority groups and major news services should exercise extreme caution before leaping to the conclusion that racism is the driving force behind every altercation between the police and a member of a minority group, given that ultimately, those same minority groups are frequently the victims of the crimes in question.

She says this because the police are more likely to be seen as the aggressors in these situations. According to the author, even if there could be a few rare examples of racist conduct on the part of the police, in most situations there are other concerns that need to be examined. Mac Donald argues that this is the case. A reviewer for Booklist named Vernon Ford recognized the significance of Mac Donald’s ideas, but he also made the observation that “since her interview subjects are obviously propolice, some readers could find this a one-sided perspective.” In spite of this, David Frum, writing for the National Review, came to the following conclusion: “Mac Donald’s study is a significant corrective to the anti-police myth-making of recent years.” Review of “Are Cops Racist?,” written by Vernon Ford and published in Booklist on January 1, 2003.
