Henry Louis Gates Biography and Career:

Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (born September 16, 1950 in Keyser, West Virginia, United States), is an American literary critic and scholar best recognised for his ground-breaking theories about African and African American literature. He used the term’signifyingin’ to refer to African and African American literary and musical history as a continuous reflection and reworking of what came before.

Henry Louis Gates, Sr. worked at a paper mill and moonlighted as a janitor, while his mother, Pauline Coleman Gates, cleaned houses. Gates graduated from high school in 1968 as valedictorian and attended a local community college before enrolling at Yale University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in history in 1973. Following his receipt of two fellowships in 1970, he took a leave of absence from Yale to travel to Africa, serving as an anaesthetist in a hospital in Tanzania and then travelling throughout the continent. He enrolled at Clare College, Cambridge, in 1973, when he was tutored by Nigerian writer Wole Soyinka. Soyinka encouraged Gates to pursue literature rather than history; he also taught him a great deal about the Yoruba culture, one of Nigeria’s largest ethnic groupings. Gates taught literature and African American studies at Yale University, Cornell University, Duke University, and Harvard University, where he was named the W.E.B. Du Bois Professor of the Humanities in 1991.

Gates joined Yale’s Black Periodical Literature Project as codirector in 1980. He established a reputation as a “literary archaeologist” in the years that followed by uncovering and compiling thousands of lost literary works (short tales, poems, reviews, and notices) by African American authors from the early nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. In the early 1980s, Gates unearthed the first novel written by an African American, Harriet E. Wilson’s Our Nig (1859), by establishing that the work was actually authored by an African American woman, not a white guy from the North, as had been commonly supposed. From the 1980s, Gates edited a number of critical anthologies of African American literature, including Black Literature and Literary Theory (1984), Bearing Witness: Selections from African American Autobiography in the Twentieth Century (1991), and The Norton Anthology of African American Literature (co-edited with Nellie Y. McKay) (1997).

In Figures in Black: Words, Signs, and the “Racial” Self (1987) and The Signifying Monkey: A Theory of Afro-American Literary Criticism (1988), Gates created the concept of signifyingin’ (1988). Significin’ is the method of representing an idea indirectly, frequently through a sarcastic, boastful, offensive, or provocative statement. According to Gates, the pervasiveness and relevance of signifyingin’ in African and African American literature and music imply that all such expression is fundamentally a discourse with past literature and music. Gates traced the practise of signifyingin’ back to Esu, the Yoruba mythology trickster figure, and to the figure of the “signification monkey,” with whom Esu is closely associated. He extended the concept to the interpretation of slave narratives and shown how it influences the works of Phillis Wheatley, Zora Neale Hurston, Frederick Douglass, the early African American periodical fiction writers, Ralph Ellison, Ishmael Reed, Alice Walker, and Wole Soyinka.

Gates campaigned for the inclusion of African American literature in the Western canon in Loose Canons: Notes on the Culture Wars (1992) and elsewhere. Other works by Gates include Speaking of Race, Speaking of Sex: Hate Speech, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties (1994), Colored People: A Memoir (1994), The Future of Race (1996; with Cornel West), Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Black Man (1997), The Trials of Phillis Wheatley: America’s First Black Poet and Her Encounters with the Founding Fathers (2003), America Behind the Color Line: Dialoguing with the Founding (2019).

Additionally, Gates was involved in a number of television documentaries that broadcast on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). He is perhaps best known for his work as the host of the television shows African American Lives (2006–08), Faces of America (2010), and Finding Your Roots (2012– ). The latter, which delves into the ancestors of modern figures, was particularly popular. Other television appearances include Wonders of the African World (1999), Black in Latin America (2011), The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross (2013), and Reconstruction: America After the Civil War (2014). (2019).
