Henry Rollins Biography and Career:

Henry Rollins emerged as a post-punk revivalist in the 1990s, he did it with no egotistical self-consciousness like that of David Byrne. Relentlessly busy since the end of Black Flag, Rollins has been writing books and poems, performing spoken word tours, appearing on radio shows and occasionally as an MTV VJ, as well as participating in various movies. Hard rock, funk, post-punk noise, and jazz experimentalism collide in Rollins’ uncompromising, passionate, cathartic fusions with Rollins’ angry, scathing self-examinations and accusations over the grind.

When he records spoken word CDs, he is noticeably more laid-back and has a wonderfully self-deprecating sense of humor that is missing from his music. He has maintained his artistic integrity throughout the years, becoming a sort of father figure for many alternative bands of the ’90s. Animal-themed Video Game Machine In Washington, D.C., Henry Garfield Rollins was born on the 13th of February 1961.

Black Flag came to town one night, and when he saw the band, he jumped on stage and started singing with them. It was soon after that the band asked Rollins for an audition and he was accepted as their new lead singer. For several years after Black Flag disbanded in 1986, Rollins had established himself as one of the most ferocious hardcore punk performers.

It was in 1987 that Rollins made his solo music debut, releasing Hot Animal Machine, as well as his debut spoken word album, Big Ugly Mouth The Duration of One’s Existence Next up, Rollins formed a supporting band called the Rollins Band, which included Theo Van Ronk, Chris Haskett and the rhythm section of Greg Ginn’s side project. There are no more Andrew Weiss and Sim Cain in the band. Life Time, the Rollins Band’s first studio album, was released in 1988, followed by the outtakes/live collection Do It in 1989.

In 1989, the Rollins Band released Hard Volume, their third studio album, as well as the spoken word collection Sweatbox; in 1990, they released Turned On, their fourth live album, and Live at McCabe’s, their fifth and final spoken word collection. The snout of a Human Rollins had a pivotal year in 1991, both for good and ill. The Rollins Band signed a distribution deal with Imago and performed at Lollapalooza as part of that deal. While Rollins and his best friend, Joe Cole, were held hostage by gunmen outside of Rollins’ Los Angeles house in December of that year.

Cole was tragically shot in the head, and Rollins’ subsequent work was influenced by the tragedy of the act, even if only in an indirect way. Rollins’ publishing brand, 2.13.61, began releasing his spoken word CDs in 1992 with Human Butt. Exene Cervenka and Nick Cave’s work, as well as the works of Henry Miller and Hubert Selby, Jr., were added to 2.13.61 in the 1990s, along with the works of other notable authors, including Rollins himself.

Also in 1992, the Rollins Band made its debut for Imago with The End of Silence, which some regarded to be Rollins’ most focused music yet, and which delivered Rollins his first charting album. In 1993, the spoken word album The Boxed Life was released, and Melvin Gibbs, the former Rollins Band bassist, took over for Weiss before the end of the year. A double-disc set of readings from Rollins’ memoir of the same name, won a Grammy for Best Spoken Word Recording in 1994 became Rollins’ breakthrough year.

A well-received performance by the Rollins Band at Woodstock ’94 was also a plus. In 1994, Details magazine named Rollins their Man of the Year, and he went on to become a contributing contributor for the publication. Rollins made his cinematic debut that year in The Chase and went on to act in films like Johnny Mnemonic, Heat, and Lost Highway over the next few years, all of which were influenced by his appearances on MTV and VH1.

Everything, As a result, the Rollins Band was left in limbo until 1997, when they signed a contract with DreamWorks. In the meantime, Rollins experimented with jazz/poetry with Everything, which featured Charles Gayle (saxophone) and Rashied Ali (drums) as musical accompaniment (drums). In 1997, the Rollins Band’s DreamWorks debut, Come in and Burn, didn’t receive the critical accolades the band had previously received.

The same year as getting in the Van, the film Black Coffee Blues included a sequence of readings from a Henry Rollins novel of the same name. Black Coffee Blues When Rollins put out Think Tank in 1998, it was his first set of non-book-related spoken word pieces in five years. Get Back in the Game It seemed to Rollins that his collaboration with the Rollins Band was over as their music became more experimental and less unrelentingly fierce at this stage.

A Los Angeles-based hard rock trio he’d been working with, Mother Superior, ended up backing him as the new Rollins Band; guitarist Jim Wilson, bassist Marcus Blake, and drummer Jason Mackenroth. Get Some Go Again was the first album to come out of this new partnership, released in 2000.

Weighting came out in 2004. In 2001, Rollins in the Wry, a collection of performances from his residency at the Los Angeles club Luna Park over the summer of 1999, was released as a new spoken word CD. A second live CD, The Only Way to Know for Certain, was released in the summer of 2002. In 2003 and 2006, Talk Is Cheap, a two-night stand in Sydney, Australia, resulted in three volumes. The fourth volume was recorded at San Jose State University in California in 2007 and was released the following year.
