Houston Astros Biography and Career:

The Houston Astros are an American baseball team that has won one World Series (2017). The Astros are in the American League (AL), but they spent their first 51 seasons in the National League (NL), winning the NL pennant in 2005, as well as the AL pennants in 2017, 2019, and 2021. The Houston Colt.45s were created in 1962 and named after the iconic American West sidearm. During its first seven seasons, the team ended in the NL’s bottom three. The Astrodome (called after Houston’s function as a hub for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration) opened in 1965, marking the start of the team’s new era.

With its futuristic design, the Astrodome was the world’s first multifunctional domed sports arena. The squad got its current nickname to better identify with the newly famous stadium. The Astros called up outfielder César Cedeo in 1970, and he became the team’s first superstar. But the Astros struggled throughout the 1970s, finishing no higher than third in their division only once (second place in 1979). The Astros signed Nolan Ryan in 1980, and he helped the team reach the postseason the following year. The eventual champion Philadelphia Phillies defeated Houston in a five-game NLCS that featured four extra-inning games, including the decisive game.

The Astros made the playoffs again in 1981 but lost to the Dodgers in another five-game series. In 1983, the Astros added future Cy Young Award winner Mike Scott, giving them one of the best starting pitching duos in the NL. In the 1986 NLCS, Houston was beaten in six games by the New York Mets. The series was memorable for its LCS-record 16-inning game six and for Scott being awarded Most Valuable Player while playing for the losing team.

Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Houston was a middle-of-the-pack squad. Starting in 1993, it won seven consecutive games and had three postseason appearances, spearheaded by the first baseman Jeff Bagwell and catcher–second baseman Craig Biggio, dubbed “the Killer B’s” by Houston fans.

Although the Astros added a third star “B” in 1999, outfielder (and eventually first baseman) Lance Berkman, they couldn’t advance past the first round in any of their three playoff appearances in 1997–99. In 2000, the team moved to Enron Field (later Minute Maid Park). The Astros lost a seven-game NLCS series to the St. Louis Cardinals in 2004. The next year, the Astros won an NLCS rematch against the Cardinals, earning a spot in the first World Series in franchise history, when they were swept by the Chicago White Sox.

The Astros’ postseason streak grew longer as the squad matured. In 2011, 2012, and 2013, Houston set franchise records for defeats (106, 107). (111). It was moved from the NL Central to the AL West in 2013 to create two 15-team North American MLB leagues. Two years later, a resurgent Astros team stunned baseball by winning 16 games and making the playoffs. While the Astros were mired in a 92-loss season, a 2014 Sports Illustrated cover story proclaimed the forward-thinking squad the “2017 World Series champions.” The Astros won the 2017 World Series in seven games, defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers to win the franchise’s first championship.

The Astros won 103 games in 2018 and progressed to the ALCS, where they were defeated by the Red Sox. Houston set a new team record with 107 victories in 2019, and went on to win the AL East and make their third World Series appearance. In a seven-game series against the Nationals, Houston lost. An investigation revealed the Astros’ 2017 and 2018 sign-stealing campaigns during the 2019 off-season. The Astros designed a system where a video camera was installed in the center-field stands of their home stadium and directed on the opposing catcher’s hand signals.

To signal the batters, a member of the organization would hit a garbage can a certain number of times, depending on the type of pitch. The team’s coach and general manager were suspended for the 2020 season and sacked shortly after. The Astros were fined $5 million and lost draught picks in 2020 and 2021. The squad did not lose its 2017 title, which many fans and media members now consider illegitimate. Despite the scandal, the team went on to be one of the best in baseball. Houston reached the ALCS in 2020 (losing 7-1 to the Rays) and the World Series in 2021. (a six-game loss to the Atlanta Braves).
