After moving to Houston in 2007, the Dynamo relocated to Robertson Stadium on the University of Houston’s campus. At BBVA Stadium in Houston’s East Downtown for the 2012 season the team relocated. On paper, the Houston Dynamo team was born at the conclusion of 2005. However, the club’s actual beginnings can be traced back to the formation of MLS. In 1996, the San Jose Clash, subsequently known as the Earthquakes, was one of the inaugural members of MLS.

During the 2005 season, Anschultz Entertainment Group purchased the Earthquakes (AEG), in light of a number of issues, including difficulties in developing an appropriate stadium for soccer, the club decided and announced that it would relocate.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber said on December 15th, 2005 that all of the players, coaches, staff, and more from the Earthquakes would be transferring over to the new club in Texas with a new name, brand, and more, and that the Houston Dynamo would be the new franchise name. As a result, the San Jose Earthquakes moniker will be kept by the league for any future expansion into the Bay Area.

The Dynamo became MLS’ newest “expansion” club when the franchise was established and there was nothing else to do except relocating staff. The rebranding and relocation to Houston were immediately successful. More than 25,000 people attended the Dynamo’s inaugural home match, a 5-2 victory against the Colorado Rapids.

Dwayne De Rosario assisted on all four of Brian Ching’s goals. Late in the game, Alejandro Moreno tacked on the last one. The Dynamo’s inaugural season would be a microcosm of this game. The Dynamo finished second in the Western Conference and easily qualified for the playoffs with an 11-8-13 record. In the course of the season, Ching and Rosario both scored 11 goals, while Brad Davis had 11 assists.

In the first round of the playoffs, Houston faced Chivas USA and lost the first leg 2-1 in Los Angeles despite a goal by Ching. It was a different story when Houston came back in the second leg to win 3-2 on aggregate due to goals from Davis and Ching.

The Dynamo hosted Colorado in the one-legged conference final. Jovan Kirovski led Rapids to an early lead. However, the Dynamo surged back and won 3-1 because of Paul Dalglish’s double and Brian Mullen’s insurance goal. After winning the conference, they were set to meet the New England Revolution in the MLS Cup finals for the championship trophy.

FC Dallas’ Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas, served as the venue for the Dynamo’s 90-minute showdown with the Revolution. Even yet, the two could not be separated. Goalkeepers from both sides came within a whisker of scoring in both halves. Brad Davis smashed the post. Taylor Twellman’s shot was halted. The second half was a continuation of the first, but neither side was able to create a significant difference. As a result, the two teams were sent to overtime.

There were a few opportunities to score in the opening half of extra time, but it was more of a defensive effort than anything else. Twellman finally found the back of the net in the 113th minute with a stunning free-kick past the goalie. The Dynamo surged across the field and Brian Ching headed in a cross to equalize only 71 seconds after the opener.

Both teams had scored two goals in the first two penalties kicks, resulting in a shootout. Defender Jay Heaps’ future was in jeopardy if both New England and Houston missed. Onstad saved the shot and Houston prevailed after an exhausting contest. As a “new” franchise in 2006, the Dynamo set an example for other expansion teams by winning the MLS Cup in their first season.

As a result of Ted Segal’s majority ownership, Gabriel Brener, Oscar De La Hoya, Ben Guill, and James Harden are all minority shareholders of the club. Tab Ramos has been the Dynamo’s head coach since the beginning of 2019.

In 2011 and 2012, they finished second in the MLS Cup and third in the Supporters’ Shield, respectively. As a result of a loss against the New England Revolution, the Dynamo finished second in the now-defunct North American SuperLiga.

To qualify for the Concacaf Champions Cup, the North American version of the Champions League, the Dynamo won MLS Cup in 2006. There was limited time for the Dynamo to prepare for the next MLS season due to the early start of the competition in February. On aggregate, they overcame Puntarenas 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the tournament. They were knocked out of the tournament in the quarterfinals by Pachuca of Mexico 5-2 on aggregate.

The Dynamo started their MLS season with a goalless draw against the LA Galaxy only a few days after exiting the regional cup. The Dynamo would lose five of their first eight games in the first two months of the season. While they lost only three games from June until the conclusion of the season, they were just one point behind Chivas USA in second place. The Dynamo made it to the playoffs once again.

The first-round playoff matchup pitted the Dynamo against FC Dallas, another team from Texas. The Dynamo were beaten 1-0 in their first away game. To force overtime, they had to win 2-1 at home in a game that saw 10 players earn yellow cards and two Dallas players sent off. They advanced to the next round with a 4-2 aggregate win against the Kansas City Wizards thanks to goals from Brian Ching and Brad Davis.

Washington D.C.’s RFK Stadium will host another MLS Cup showdown between the New England Revolution and the Houston Dynamo, this time in the one-legged conference final. Only Brian Ching was unable to participate due to injury in the 2007 edition. In the first half, Taylor Twellman gave the Revs a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season. Joseph Ngwenya equalized the score in the second half before Dwayne De Rosario scored the game-winning goal with 15 minutes remaining.

A much of the same squad led the Dynamo to a second consecutive MLS Cup victory, including manager Dominic Kinnear, who also had to contend with his side’s participation in the Super Liga, a competition that pits Mexican and American/Canadian MLS teams against one other.

The Dynamo had a difficult time repeating the success of their first few seasons. It was a disappointing season for the Western Conference champions in 2008, but they also reached the semifinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup that year. In 2009, they were eliminated from the Concacaf Champions League group stage once again and were unable to advance to the playoffs.

In 2010, the Dynamo reached a new low as they failed to make the playoffs for the first time in their history. Even a Super Liga semi-final participation couldn’t mask the poor domestic season. A strong end to the season helped propel the Dynamo into the playoffs in 2011 when they easily dispatched Philadelphia and Kansas City in the first round. LA Galaxy icons David Beckham and Landon Donovan were on hand for the MLS Cup match against the New York Red Bulls. In the end, the Los Angeles Galaxy prevailed 1-0.

The 2012 season may not have gone or concluded the way the team had hoped it would. However, the Dynamo’s first two matches of the season were both victories. Since then, they’ve built their own soccer-specific stadium, joining the expanding list of MLS teams who have completely owned and operated their own stadiums. May 12th, 2012 marked the official opening of BBVA Stadium with a victory against DC United.

The Dynamo made it back to the MLS Cup in 2012 following a season of ups and downs, with more ups than downs. They went through the regular season with an undefeated home record, securing them another postseason berth. For their part, they won their group in the autumn and advanced to the quarterfinals of Concacaf’s Champions League, which was held in the spring of 2013.

To advance to the conference finals, they had to face the Chicago Fire, who they defeated on their way to victory. When they met DC United in the finals, they won. A repetition of the MLS Cup defeat in Los Angeles was in store for Dynamo after they beat United in a rematch of the previous season’s final. It didn’t seem to matter this time around, either. Second consecutive year, the Dynamo were beaten 3-1 at home by Beckham, Donovan, and Co., leaving Houston without a point.

The Dynamo have only qualified for the playoffs twice since their back-to-back MLS Cup defeats in 2013 and 2017. As a result of this, each time they were a last-place finisher. Dominic Kinnear, the San Jose Earthquake’s longtime manager, departed the team at the end of the 2014 season. Brad Davis and DaMarcus Beasley, two of the club’s most important players, were both signed to long-term contracts, but the club’s new manager Owen Coyle and ownership reshuffling and changes didn’t help the team perform well.

For the first time in 2018, the organization was filled with joy after winning the US Open Cup, a national competition for teams of all levels that is modeled after England’s FA Cup. They only played a non-MLS team in the quarterfinals against Sporting Kansas City (previously the Wizards) and in the semifinals against LAFC, an expansion team.

Mauro Manotas opened the score for the Dynamo in the fourth minute of the final, and they cruised to victory. In the 25th minute, Colombian attacker Auston Trusty stretched the Dynamo’s advantage to ensure a comfortable win and their only recent victories.
