Walter Lewin Biography and Career:
Walter Hendrik Gustav Lewin is a Dutch astrophysicist who was a professor of physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the 1960s and 1970s. He was born on January 29, 1936. Lewin received his PhD in nuclear physics from the Delft University of Technology in 1965. He then went on to teach physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for a total of 43 years, commencing in 1966 and ending in 2009.
The most significant contributions that Lewin has made to the field of astrophysics include the finding of the first neutron star with a slowly rotating core through all-sky balloon surveys, as well as research in X-ray detection conducted through investigations using satellites and observatories all over the world. Lewin is well-known for his popular lectures on physics and enormous online courses offered via onedX and MIT OpenCourseWare.
He has won a number of honors for exceptional teaching and is a member of the National Academy of Education. The online versions of these lectures have been seen around 2 million times per year. He became a member of an x-ray astronomy group at MIT and worked with George W. Clark to do all-sky balloon surveys. Up to the late 1970s, there were around twenty balloon flights that were completed without incident.
The number of x-ray sources that were known at the time was doubled as a result of these balloon surveys, which led to the identification of five additional sources. In addition, it was discovered that some of these x-ray sources were variable, and some of them were x-ray flares. Because they were only in the air for a few minutes, the rockets that were employed by the other researchers were unable to detect that the x-ray sources changed.
On the other hand, the balloons were able to remain in the air for a significant amount of time. In addition, the surveys led to the identification of GX 1+4, which has the distinction of being the first slowly spinning X-ray pulsar to be located. In the year 1936 in the Dutch city of The Hague, Lewin was born to parents named Walter Simon Lewin and Pieternella Johanna van der Tang. During World War II, when Nazi Germany seized the Netherlands, he was still a youngster at the time.
It is unknown what happened to his Jewish paternal grandparents Gustav and Emma Lewin in 1942; it is possible that they were murdered at Auschwitz or that they perished of illness or famine. Lewin’s mother was responsible for the upbringing of her children when her husband abruptly upped and left the family one day, without providing any explanation. Lewin was a host on MIT Cable TV for about 15 years, beginning in 1982.
He presented a new one-hour show each week throughout that time. They were broadcast around the clock, seven days a week, to assist first-year students with their homework tasks for each week (they were called “Help Sessions”). The lectures that Walter Lewin gave in 1992 on Newtonian Mechanics (co-lectured with Bob Ledoux) and Lewin’s “Help Sessions” have been broadcast for nearly six years (beginning in 1995) on UWTV in Seattle, Washington, and have reached an audience of about four million people during that time.
Lewin personally replied to each one of the tens of thousands of e-mail requests that were sent to him annually by UWTV viewers.
