Iain Duncan Smith Biography and Career:

David Cameron appointed Iain Duncan Smith to the position of work and pensions secretary in his cabinet in 2010. He was born on April 9, 1954, in Edinburgh, Scotland, and is a British politician who served as leader of the Conservative Party (2001–03) and as work and pensions secretary in Prime Minister David Cameron’s cabinet (2010–16).

Private education was provided for Duncan Smith by his father, who served as a Royal Air Force pilot during World War II. He also spent a period of time at HMS Conway, a merchant navy training school located in Wales. Upon graduation from the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, he was commissioned into the Scots Guards, where he advanced through the ranks until he was promoted to captain in 1979. In 1981, he made the decision that civilian life was for him, and he began working for the defense electronics company GEC-Marconi as a sales and marketing executive. This position required him to travel frequently to the United States, where he developed relationships with Pentagon officials and Republican politicians. After a long courtship, he finally tied the knot in 1982 with Elizabeth Wynne Fremantle, daughter of the Fifth Baron Cottesloe.

Duncan Smith was elected to the House of Commons in 1992 as the Member of Parliament for Chingford and Woodford Green, two mostly Conservative middle-class neighborhoods on the outskirts of London. After a short period of time, he became a member of an anti-European Union group of Conservative backbenchers who criticized their own party’s leadership for signing the EU’s Maastricht Treaty and who often voted against the government on European matters. His positions on other matters cemented his reputation as a right-winger, most notably by suggesting that the role of the state should be curtailed greatly and that taxes should be drastically decreased.

In 1997, after the Conservatives lost their majority in the House of Commons, the new party leader, William Hague, named Duncan Smith to his shadow cabinet, initially to serve as the party’s official spokesperson on social security issues. In 1999, he was appointed to the position of shadow defense secretary, although he retained his reputation as a staunch opponent of European integration.

On June 7, 2001, Duncan Smith ran for the Conservative Party leadership after Hague resigned as a result of the party’s dismal showing in the general election. He campaigned on a promise that he would never support the United Kingdom joining the European Union’s single currency. As shown by his victory in the final runoff against pro-European (and significantly more experienced) challenger Kenneth Clarke, Duncan Smith’s views were seen to be more in line with those of the party’s membership, and he received an overwhelming 61 percent of the vote. He achieved this feat in spite of the fact that he was the only one of the five candidates who had never before served as a minister in the United Kingdom government.

Early on in his tenure as leader of the Conservative Party, however, Duncan Smith found himself with declining support among his own members, who questioned his capacity to beat Prime Minister Tony Blair and the Labour Party in the next general election. The Conservative Party was led by Michael Howard, who was elected leader of the party on November 6, 2003, after losing a no-confidence vote in him in October 2003.

It was in 2004 that Duncan Smith founded the Centre for Social Justice, an organization dedicated to the eradication of poverty. Cameron’s Conservative-led coalition government from 2010 to March 2016, when Duncan Smith resigned as work and pensions secretary in protest of the level of cuts to be imposed on disability benefits, won re-election to the Chingford and Woodford Green seat three times. Duncan Smith was elected to the seat in 2005, 2010, and 2015.

A longtime opponent of the European Union, Duncan Smith was an outspoken supporter of the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the organization, which was supported by the people of the United Kingdom in a referendum in June 2016. Later, Duncan Smith acted as campaign chairman for Boris Johnson’s successful effort to become a leader of the Conservative Party and ultimately prime minister. Duncan Smith was appointed to this position in 2010.
