Indianapolis Colts Biography and Career:

The Indianapolis Colts are an American football club headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, that plays in the National Football League. They are a member of the American Football Conference (AFC) of the National Football League, and they play in the south division of the AFC (NFL).

The team was formally established in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1953, although its roots may be traced back to the Dayton Triangles, a founding member of the National Football League (NFL) that was established in 1913. After a series of rebranding efforts, the franchise settled on the name Baltimore Colts, taking over for a former team of the same name that had disbanded in 1950.

The Colts, who played their home games at Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium, made history by being the first NFL club to have cheerleaders. The club then moved to Indianapolis in 1984, first playing in the Hoosier Dome, which was later renamed the RCA Dome, until moving to Lucas Oil Stadium in 2008. The team has now played at Lucas Oil Stadium since 2008.

The Indianapolis Colts were formed in 1953 from the ashes of the Dallas Texans National Football League squad. After two previous professional football teams with the name Baltimore Colts existed before 1953, and ongoing fan support in the Baltimore region persuaded the NFL to sanction the Baltimore-based owners’ acquisition and relocation of the defunct Texans.

They hired future Hall of Fame head coach Weeb Ewbank in 1954 and signed Johnny Unitas, who went on to become one of football’s all-time best quarterbacks, in 1956 when they were renamed the Indianapolis Colts. When Unitas took over as the head coach of the New York Giants in the late 1950s, the team had a potent attack that included three other future Hall.

After a one-yard touchdown rush by running back Alan Ameche in a sudden-death overtime session, the Indianapolis Colts won the 1958 NFL championship game 23–17 against the New York Giants in a nationally broadcast NFL championship game. With the appellation “The Greatest Game Ever Played,” the 1958 championship game was widely regarded as the single most significant event in the popularisation of professional football in the second part of the twentieth century. The next season, the Colts repeated as NFL champions, defeating the Giants in the championship game for the second time in three years.

During Super Bowl III in 1969, when the much-favored NFL champion Indianapolis Colts faced the upstart American Football League (AFL) champion New York Jets, the franchise made yet another remarkable appearance in the championship game. As the Jets’ quarterback, Joe Namath made headlines by declaring before the game that he “assured” a Super Bowl win, and then leading his 18-point underdog club to the largest upset in Super Bowl history. The Indianapolis Colts won their first Super Bowl in 1971, defeating the Dallas Cowboys 16–13 in the last game of the season.

A number of disappointing seasons were endured after Unitas’s departure from the organization in 1973. The team did not win a playoff game throughout the duration of its time in Baltimore. Colts owner Robert Irsay transferred the franchise to Indianapolis in 1984 after failing to get local government support for a new stadium. The relocation occurred in the middle of the night before most Colts fans were aware that a move was underway. After the club was relocated, the Colts Marching Band continued to represent the team in parades and civic events until the Cleveland Browns relocated to the city and became the Ravens in 1996, when the Cleveland Browns became the Ravens.

For the first 11 seasons in Indianapolis, the Colts failed to compete for a playoff spot, only making it once in the playoffs. On draught day in 1998, the Colts selected quarterback Peyton Manning, who joined with wide receiver Marvin Harrison and running back Ezekiel James to form one of the league’s top offensive units in the early 2000s. Peyton Manning was a first-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 1998. Even though Manning set NFL passing records and guided the squad to multiple victories, he was often criticized for his team’s inability to move farther in the playoffs.

The squad finally broke through in 2007, defeating the Chicago Bears in the Super Bowl and putting an end to speculation that Manning would be unable to win the big game. After winning their first 14 games of the season in 2009, the Indianapolis Colts were able to secure the top seed in the AFC for the postseason that year. Later, the Colts cruised to the Super Bowl, where they were defeated by the New Orleans Saints in a thriller.

Preseason neck surgery forced quarterback Peyton Manning to miss the entirety of the 2011 NFL season, and the Colts finished with a 2–14 record, ending the team’s streak of nine consecutive seasons with at least ten wins, which also included seven straight 12-win seasons (2003–09), which set an NFL record.

As a result of the Colts’ dismal record, they were awarded the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL draught (which they used to select quarterback Andrew Luck), and Manning was released during the off-season to avoid paying him a large contract bonus and to begin rebuilding around a younger core of players. Luck then guided the Colts to a shocking 11–5 record in his first season with the franchise, which concluded in a first-round playoff defeat in his second.

The Colts won the AFC South in 2013, which they followed up with a spectacular 28-point comeback victory in their first playoff game, before being defeated in the second round of the playoffs the following season. Luck’s performance continued to improve, and the Colts won their third consecutive division title in 2014, as well as a postseason upset of Manning’s new club, the Denver Broncos, en way to a defeat in the AFC championship game.

The Colts, on the other hand, we’re unable to build on their success, and they completed the next two seasons with 8–8 records and outside of the postseason. Despite undergoing shoulder surgery following the 2016 season, Luck was unable to play for the entire 2017 season, during which the Colts finished with a 4–12 record as a result of difficulties during the rehabilitation process.

With the Colts off to a 0–5 start in 2018, Luck returned to the field for a complete season, during which he rallied his team to win 10 games and qualify for the playoffs, where they were eliminated in the divisional round. Luck announced his retirement from football only days before the start of the 2019 season, citing a series of ailments that had affected his enjoyment of the game. Despite the sudden loss of the team’s great quarterback, the Colts were unexpectedly competitive that season, ending with a 7–9 record at the conclusion of the season.
