Ira Glass Biography and Career:

Ira Glass is a well-known voice on American public radio. He has been on several NPR shows, including Morning Edition and Talk of the Nation, and is the host and producer of the radio and TV show This American Life.

He started in radio in his teens in Baltimore and worked with Keith Talbot at NPR during his Brown University summer vacations. Before covering his tales in his late twenties, he was an editor and interviewer for many years. Although he relocated to Chicago, he never stopped working in public radio, contributing to All Things Considered and co-hosting The Wild Room.

He and Torey Malatia created This American Life with funding from the MacArthur Foundation; the show quickly became a hit, earning a Peabody Award after just six months and going on to be syndicated throughout the country the following year. Showtime adapted and aired the show under the same name for three seasons. In addition to the radio program, Glass has authored or co-written several articles, novels, and even comic books.

Glass was born to Jewish parents Barry and Shirley Glass on March 3, 1959, in Baltimore, Maryland. While growing up, he had two sisters, one younger and one older. Shirley Glass was a clinical psychologist, and Barry Glass began as a radio broadcaster before becoming a certified public accountant and creating the GlassJacobson Financial Group. In light of her contributions, The New York Times dubbed her “the godmother of infidelity research.”

Glass’s parents wanted him to become a doctor, but he always had his heart set on being an astronaut. He had an early appreciation for humor because of his family’s habit of attending the theatre. When he was 11 years old, he and his sister began hosting events in their home’s basement, inviting other kids from the neighborhood to attend. When he was young, he took extra work as a magician.

Glass went to Milford Mill High School in Baltimore County, where he was on the yearbook staff and helped run the student literary journal. His participation in the yearbook began in the tenth grade. It lasted until his 1977 graduation. Glass participated in several plays as a member of the Milford theatre club. Acting performances include Captain George Brackett in South Pacific (1975), Lowe in Damn Yankees (1976), and Bud Frump in How to Succeed in Business (1977) at Milford High School.

Glass also participated in the theatrical community by joining the Thespian Society. Glass has said that the musicals he saw as a kid, particularly Fiddler on the Roof, significantly impacted his writing style as a journalist. During his junior and senior years, Glass served on the executive board of the student government. In 1977, Glass was a Milford Mill Honour Society member and participated in the school’s morning announcements. He worked as a joke writer for Baltimore radio host Johnny Walker in high school.

Glass attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, as a pre-med major after finishing high school. Even though he didn’t know either of them then, fellow graduates Mary Zimmerman and David Sedaris attended. He devoted much time to the campus radio station, where he worked on commercials. He shifted his academic focus to semiotics after transferring to Brown University. That’s where he met Roland Barthes, whose study of S/Z, he recalls now, “made me understand what I could do in radio.” In 1982, he finished school.

Glass dated Ernie Pook’s Comeek author and cartoonist Lynda Barry for a while. She went to see him in Washington, D.C. and ended up relocating to Chicago in the summer of 1989 to be closer to other cartoonists. In August of 2005, Glass wed writer and editor Anaheed Alani. They decided to give their once-contentious relationship another go after dating briefly.

Glass said, “We have the whole Middle East crisis in our house.” Her Christian mother and Iraqi Muslim father are both very religious people. Piney, a pit bull, was their joint pet. In an interview later that year, Glass revealed that he and Alani had lived apart for three years before their March 2017 announcement on This American Life. Divorce papers from Glass were allegedly filed on April 17, 2017.

Glass, then 19 years old, searched for jobs in television, radio, and advertising in Baltimore after finishing his first year of college. Meanwhile, he found work in a hospital’s emergency room in the shock trauma unit. However, someone at the local rock station suggested he contact Jay Kernis at the headquarters of NPR’s Washington, DC.

He followed the advice and got a job editing promotional announcements for free, which led to him becoming Keith Talbot’s production assistant. Much to his parent’s dismay, he decided to remain with NPR and not pursue medicine once the summer ended. They posted a mocking ad in the newspaper’s classifieds when he finished college, reading, “Corporate office seeks semiotics grad for a high paying position.”

Showtime expressed interest in adapting the event for television, but the creators declined because they didn’t want to water down the structure and end up with something “tacky and awful.” However, the crew decided to develop the program when Showtime bowed to many demands, such as a format that didn’t resemble a news magazine. Showtime bought six further episodes after seeing the pilot in January 2007, and the premiere aired on March 22, 2007.

Glass said he shed 30 pounds (14 kg) in preparation for this undertaking during an interview with Patt Morrison of Southern California Public Radio. To shoot, he relocated to the Big Apple. After two seasons and thirteen episodes, the program was canceled in 2009 due to the high production costs and time commitments involved.

Glass collaborated with Monica Bill Barnes & Company’s Monica Barnes and Anna Bass to develop Three Acts, Two Dancers, and One Radio Host in 2013. In November 2013, Glass visited Google’s offices and met with the Google Doodle team, where it was decided that the two companies would work together on a project. Glass proposed that they conduct interviews with “random” individuals on Valentine’s Day 2014 to learn about their romantic relationships.

For the American release, instead of a radio announcer, users clicked on a candy heart that matched each letter in “Google” to hear a unique love tale. Roger Neill wrote the music, while Glass did the interviews with fellow American Life producers Miki Meek and Mike Birbiglia.

Glass took his narrative talk show, Seven Things I’ve Learned, on the road in 2019. How to Tell a Story, Save the Cat, Fail to Succeed, Amuse Yourself, and War are some of the Act Titles in this Variety Show. The program included two dancers from previously collaborated with Monica Bill Barnes & Company.
