Irwin Winkler Biography and Career:

Sol and Anna Winkler were the parents of Winkler, who was born in New York City to a Jewish family. A bumper car ride on the boardwalk was one of his first occupations when he was a kid growing up in Coney Island. Winkler was a high school dropout who was accepted to New York University under the G.I. bill, but he felt out of place among the university’s older and more mature classmates. He enlisted in the Army at the start of the Korean War and served in Louisiana for two years.

He returned to New York University after his military service and earned a bachelor’s degree in American Literature in 1955. As a WMA employee in New York City, Winkler wed his wife, Margo Winkler, in 1959. In 1966, they made the move to Los Angeles.
