Jackie Healy-Rae was born John Patrick Healy on March 9, 1931 in Reascaisleach, Meelick, County Kerry, Ireland. This location is close to the village of Kilgarvan in County Kerry. He was the first of four sons and two daughters born to Danny Healy, a farmer from Reascaisleach, and his second wife Mary (née Riordan). Healy-Rae passed away in 2014. With his first wife, Danny Healy welcomed another six children into the world. Because Healy was such a prevalent surname in the region, the members of this family were known as the Healy Raes, which is the name of their townland.

Jackie had a difficult childhood due to the fact that he was brought up on a sixty-acre farm that was mostly made up of bog and coarse pasture. This was particularly true when his father became permanently incapacitated around the year 1939. At the age of thirteen, he began working on the family farm, and he left Kilgarvan National School to do so. Beginning in the late 1940s, he also worked in forestry, and he drove trucks and hackney vehicles.

In 1953, he showed Julie Healy, an American visitor and a distant relative, about the county of Kerry. After that, he accompanied her to New York, where they were married in August of that year. During his holiday trip to Kilgarvan that year, he made the decision to remain there and eventually took over the management of the family farm with his new wife. Together, they would have six children: four boys and two girls. Julie was a gifted linguist who was proficient in seven languages. It was at her urging that he subsequently separated himself from the many other John Healys by dubbing himself Jackie Healy-Rae in order to differentiate himself from the many other John Healys.

 

In the United States, he had been successful in earning enough money to purchase a rickshaw and a used tractor, which enabled him to start his own business as an agricultural contractor. In the early 1960s, he began purchasing bulldozers and JCBs for the purpose of constructing roads, reclaiming land, and clearing sites, which marked the beginning of a long and profitable collaboration with Kerry County Council. He was a fast and fearless wing-forward for the Kilgarvan senior hurling team from the mid-1950s until the late 1960s, even though he was not particularly skilled. He won county medals in 1956 and 1958. He played the melodeon and the saxophone in local bands as a form of recreation. He also played hurling for the Kilgarvan senior team. During the 1966 by-election for South Kerry, which was managed by Neil Blaney, who was then the by-election specialist for Fianna Fáil, he became engaged in the party (qv).

Healy-Rae joined Blaney’s specialist team after becoming enamoured with his electioneering strategy, which consisted of combining traditional torchlit rallies with methodical canvassing and American-style motorcades. He went on to distinguish himself in a series of by-elections that lasted into the middle of the 1970s. On one of these occasions, Healy-Rae became famous for his pyrotechnical flair. For example, he once poured gasoline down the middle of a key street and then lit it on fire.

Healy-specialty Rae’s was leading processions in which people hoisted burning sods of turf aloft on pitchforks. After becoming chairman of Comhaltas Ceoltóir Éireann in Kerry in 1972, he began organising a series of very successful county fleadh ceoils in Kilgarvan beginning in 1969. These fleadh ceoils were held on a yearly basis and received widespread recognition (1970–75).

In December of 1969, he made the decision to purchase a hotel in Kilgarvan with the intention of converting it into a bar and launching a new singing lounge for ballad groups. In spite of his expanding wealth, he maintained a simple way of life and put in long hours working in politics, farming (ultimately owning 300 acres), running heavy equipment for hire, and pouring alcohol, despite the fact that he was a moderate drinker. In 1977, he ended his marriage to his wife and began an affair with Kathleen Cahill, a widow who was raising a kid outside of Killarney in the county of Kerry. He kept their affair a secret from his wife. In later years, she served as his secretary. In 1973, he was elected to the Kerry County Council by Fianna Fáil, and in 1974, he won the Killarney district seat in local elections by conducting an exceptionally professional campaign.

This led to his being co-opted into the Kerry County Council. After that, he maintained a comfortable hold on his seat. His histrionics and outlandish outbursts gained him extensive coverage in the local newspaper, and while he was capable of making constructive contributions, he became known as the most colourful of Kerry’s famously voluble county councillors. Kerry is known for its incredibly vocal county councillors. On the other hand, when he was head of the council throughout both of his tenure (1980–1981, and 1995–1996), he put a stop to such dramatics. In 1975, he appeared personally offended by suggestions that officials were leaking information to certain councillors. He dealt with council officials and fellow representatives in an effective manner.

In Kerry, he was a leader in the movement to promote motions that opened the door for the growth of unique rural dwellings. As a result of his rabble-rousing performance at the 1983 ard fheis, which was shown on television, he gained a national prominence as the archetypal Fianna Fáil backwoodsman. Radio programmes located in Dublin often contacted him anytime they had a need for some colourful country filler. He bemoaned the expulsion of Blaney from Fianna Fáil (for his unwavering nationalism) and the party’s willingness to compromise on matters such as extradition and coalition governance, but he refrained from quitting the party.
