Jacksonville Jaguars Biography and Career:

The Jacksonville Jaguars are a National Football League (NFL) American football team headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida. They are now a member of the American Football Conference (AFC) of the National Football League, where they play in the Southern Division (NFL). The Jacksonville Jaguars, along with the Carolina Panthers, were the first expansion clubs to enter the NFL in 1995.

Every year, the city of Gainesville holds the Gator Bowl, an annual civic highlight that is generally accompanied by parties, ceremonies, parades, and other activities in the weeks preceding up to the big game. Jacksonville also serves as the site of the annual Georgia-Florida football game.

Steel trusses were used to construct the Gator Bowl stadium during the Great Depression, and it was regularly expanded throughout the years, with the latest edition of the reinforced-concrete west upper deck being in 1982. Both the World Football League (Jacksonville Sharks/Express) and the United States Football League (Jacksonville Bulls) played their home games at the stadium, which also hosted the odd NFL exhibition game.

In 1967 and 1968, the city also served as the site of the American Football League All-Star Game. For a short while, the city sought to entice the Baltimore Colts, whose owner Robert Irsay famously parked a helicopter at the stadium as hundreds of Jacksonville residents pleaded with him to relocate the franchise.

At one time in the late 1980s, city officials tried unsuccessfully to persuade the Houston Oilers to relocate to Jacksonville. To entice the Oilers, several attempts were made, including the fabrication of a “Jacksonville Oilers” flag and the designation of a special portion of the Gator Bowl as a non-alcohol, family-friendly section for projected home games.

The NFL started in 1991 that it will add two additional clubs, with the first team expected to join in time for the 1993 season. The NFL had not grown since the 1976 season when the Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers were added to the league; nevertheless, with the growth of the sport, the NFL thought the time was appropriate to add more clubs to the league. Ultimately, five cities were selected as finalists for the two new clubs.

The cities were selected based on their proximity to the two new franchises. From the outset, Charlotte and St. Louis were regarded as the major favorites, with Baltimore being considered a strong contender as a third option. Because the NFL did not have an established presence in the region, Memphis was still considered an outside chance, despite its lower-than-average offer.

A number of factors led to Jacksonville being seen as the underdog in the race for the championship. Florida already had two NFL teams: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who played in Tampa and were approximately a four-hour drive away, and the Miami Dolphins, who played in Miami and were about a four-hour drive away.

As a result of Jacksonville’s close proximity to the Georgia state line, an expansion team would have to compete not only with Florida’s three major college football teams. Jacksonville was also the smallest television market in the competition, and it was the only one that did not rank in the top 50 Nielsen markets in the country.

The most significant possible hurdle to the Jacksonville offer, on the other hand, was the incessant upheaval and dispute that surrounded the prospective ownership group. Even before the NFL revealed its plan to expand in 1989, the organization had been founded. The club, which went under the name Touchdown Jacksonville!, submitted an official application to the NFL in 1991, and was accepted.

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and Jacksonville entrepreneur and political kingmaker Tom Petway were among the group of investors that founded the company. The Jacksonville Jaguars were the name chosen by this organization in 1991 when they declared their intention to field a club. Eventually, after a number of defections and mutinies, J. Wayne Weaver, the shoe mogul and creator of Nine West, took over as leader of the organization.

The Jacksonville Jaguars, along with the Carolina Panthers, were the NFL’s first expansion club in two decades when they joined the league in 1995. The Jaguars ended with a 4-12 record in their first season in the league. Both the Jaguars (7-9) and the Panthers (7-9) beat the previous mark of three victories established by the Cincinnati Bengals in 1968 for the most wins by an expansion franchise.

Many of the players who would go on to lead Jacksonville to early success began to establish themselves during this inaugural season, including quarterback Mark Brunell (acquired in a draught day trade from Green Bay), offensive lineman Tony Boselli (drafted with the 2nd overall pick in the 1995 NFL Draft), running back James Stewart (also drafted in 1995), and wide receiver Jimmy Smith (signed as a free agent).

The season was the franchise’s tenth season in the NFL and the team’s first in the AFC South. As a result of the presence of two Pro Bowl players, defensive tackles Marcus Stroud and John Henderson, the Jaguars’ defense was a strength. Last season, Byron Leftwich had a successful season, which was aided by excellent performances from long-time players Fred Taylor and Jimmy Smith.

Announcing the hiring of Doug Marrone as the team’s new head coach on January 9, 2017, as well as the extension of General Manager David Caldwell’s contract and the return of Tom Coughlin to Jacksonville as Executive Vice President of Football Operations, the Jaguars made a number of other announcements. Doug Marrone and David Caldwell both report to Tom Coughlin, the Executive Vice President of the organization.
