James Cleverly Biography and Career:

James Cleverly, born James Spencer Cleverly TD, VR, MP, is a Conservative politician from the United Kingdom. Cleverly is now the Member of Parliament for Braintree as well as the Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party. From 2008 to 2016, he served as a member of the London Assembly representing the boroughs of Bexley and Bromley.

He was initially elected in the 2015 general election, and he was re-elected in the subsequent snap election in 2017. In the 2016 EU membership referendum, he spoke in favour of a Brexit vote. James was born on September 4, 1969, in the London borough of Lewisham, United Kingdom. As of 2018, he is 49 years old. He married Susannah Janet Temple Sparks in 2000, and the pair has two kids, Freddy and Rupert, who are his pride and joy. Cleverly was born at Lewisham Hospital, in the southeast London borough of Lewisham, to a British father and a Sierra Leonean mother.

He had a private education at Riverton School and Colfe’s School, both of which are located in Lee, London. Having served in the British Army for a brief period of time before being medically discharged, he went on to get a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management from Thames Valley University. He had worked in the magazine and digital publishing industries before getting elected.

Cleverly was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Royal Artillery, Territorial Army, on the 6th of October, 1991, after completing his probationary period. His commission was confirmed in January 1993, and he was promoted to the rank of substantive second lieutenant. On 6 October 1993, he was promoted to lieutenant, and on 26 May 1998, he was promoted to captain, and on 1 November 2003, he was promoted to major. He served as Battery Commander of 266 (Para) Battery Royal Artillery from 1995 until 2005. (Volunteers). Since being promoted to lieutenant colonel on 1 March 2015, Cleverly has served as a Staff Officer in the 1st (UK) Armoured Division and is now stationed at Central Volunteers Headquarters Royal Artillery, Woolwich, London.

Cleverly was chosen as the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Braintree in the 7 May general election, succeeding Brooks Newmark, who was then serving as the incumbent Conservative MP. Cleverley was re-elected as Braintree’s Member of Parliament on the 8th of June, 2017, with an increased majority (62.8 percent of the votes cast).

Clive Cleverly had previously run for and been defeated in a number of elections in the London Borough of Lewisham, including the borough council elections in 2002, a borough council by-election in 2003, for the Lewisham East constituency seat in the UK Parliament in the 2005 general election, and as the Conservative candidate for the position of directly elected mayor of Lewisham in 2006.

Cleverly was re-selected as the Conservative candidate for Bexley and Bromley in the 2012 Greater London Authority elections, and he went on to win the seat with 88,482 votes (52.6 percent of the vote), giving him a 47,768-vote majority. Following his election to the House of Commons in 2015, he chose not to run for re-election in the 2016 assembly election. The Conservative parliamentary candidate for Braintree in the 7 May general election was chosen in January 2015 after the incumbent Conservative MP, Brooks Newmark, resigned following controversy over sexting and the sending of obscene images over the internet.

Cleverly was elected to the House of Commons in January 2015. Following the first selection process being secretly delayed by CCHQ when the local party picked someone who was not on the authorised candidates’ list, they were advised to ‘think again’, his selection came as a surprise. He was afterwards elected to the position of Member of Parliament for the constituency. In the 2016 EU membership referendum, he spoke in favour of a Brexit vote. Cleverley was re-elected as Braintree’s Member of Parliament on 8 June 2017 in a general election in which he received an improved majority (62.8 percent of the votes cast).
