Jamin Ben Raskin was born on December 13, 1962, in Washington, D.C., to Barbara (née Bellman) Raskin and Marcus Raskin, both of whom were raised in a Jewish family. ‘s mother was a journalist and author, and’s father worked on President John F. Kennedy’s National Security Council as a former staff aide. He was also a co-founder of the Institute for Policy Studies and a progressive activist.
Raskin graduated from Georgetown Day School in 1979, when he was sixteen years old. In 1983, he received a Bachelor of Arts in government with a specialty in political theory from Harvard College, where he graduated with honors and membership in Phi Beta Kappa. Upon graduation from Harvard Law School in 1987, he was named Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard Law Review, a degree that is considered the highest honor in the profession.
More than 25 years ago, Raskin taught constitutional law at the American University Washington College of Law, where he met and mentored future impeachment manager Stacey Plaskett, who would go on to become his colleague. He was a co-founder and director of the LL.M. program in law and government at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a co-founder of the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project.
During the years 1989 to 1990, Raskin worked as the general attorney for the National Rainbow Coalition, founded by Jesse Jackson. His representation of Ross Perot in relation to Perot’s exclusion from the 1996 United States presidential debates occurred in 1996. Raskin authored an op-ed for the Washington Post in which he sharply criticized the Federal Election Commission and the Commission on Presidential Debates for their rulings on the presidential election. As of 2017, he has served as the United States Representative representing Maryland’s 8th congressional district. In Montgomery County, a wealthy suburban county northwest of Washington, DC, the district is located, and it stretches through rural Frederick County to the Pennsylvania border. From 2007 until 2016, he served as a member of the Maryland State Senate, where he represented the Democratic Party.
Raskin serves as the chair of the Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties and as co-chair of the Congressional Freethought Caucus in the United States House of Representatives. He also served as the chief impeachment manager for President Donald Trump’s second impeachment attempt, which was successful.
His last position was as a constitutional law professor at the American University Washington College of Law, where he co-founded and directed the LL.M. program on law and governance and co-founded the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project, both of which he co-founded.
