The Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals is currently Janet DiFiore. The 21st of January, 2016, marked the day she took office. Her current term expires on December 31, 2025. Janet Marie DiFiore is a longtime inhabitant of Westchester County. She was born on August 9, 1955, in Mount Vernon, New York, the only child of Italian immigrants, and she has lived there her whole life. She attended Mount Vernon High School and earned her diploma there. During his time as a student in law school, DiFiore interned with the District Attorney of Westchester County, Carl A. Vergari. After receiving his law degree in 1981, Mr. DiFiore began his legal career working as an assistant district attorney in the office of the Westchester District Attorney. DiFiore left the company in 1987 to raise her family and work part-time as an attorney at the legal firm of Goodrich & Bendish, where she remained employed until her retirement in 1994.

During this time, Mr. DiFiore also held the position of deputy village attorney for the town of Bronxville in the state of New York. DiFiore made his way back to the office in 1994 and was appointed to the position of head of the drugs department by District Attorney Jeanine F. Pirro. In 1998, DiFiore won election to the Westchester County Court, where he now serves as a judge. From 1999 till 2002, she was in charge of the department. DiFiore granted permission for additional DNA testing to be conducted in the case of Jeffrey Mark Deskovic, who had been falsely convicted of the rape and murder of a fellow student. Deskovic was exonerated by the evidence and freed from jail after serving a sentence of 16 years.
