Janet Yellen Biography and Career:

Janet Louise Yellen is the full name of the prominent American economist known simply as Janet Yellen. She has served both as secretary of the United States Department of the Treasury and as chair of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, which is the central bank of the United States and is also known as “the Fed” (since 2021). Yellen was born on August 13, 1946, in the United States of America in the borough of Brooklyn, New York.

She shattered the stereotype of women in leadership roles by making history by becoming the first woman to ever hold each of those positions. Yellen received her undergraduate degree in economics from Brown University in 1967 and her doctorate in economics from Yale University. Both institutions are located in the United States. Both of these educational institutions can be found in the United States (1971).

After that, she then became an assistant professor of economics at Harvard University, where she remained employed from the years 1972 to 1976. She worked as an economist for the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System between the years 1977 and 1978, and then she taught at the London School of Economics and Political Science between the years 1978 and 1980.

Her most recent position was as a lecturer at the London School of Economics and Political Science. 1980 marked the beginning of Yellen’s career in academia when she became a member of the teaching staff at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. There, she participated in research and taught students of all levels macroeconomics, for which she received a number of teaching honors.

She was recognized for both of her endeavors with awards. In 1992, she was named the Bernard T. Rocca, Jr. Professor of International Business and Trade, and in 1999, she was given the titles of Eugene E. and Catherine M. Trefethen Professor of Business Administration and Professor of Economics. After that, she was given the title of professor emerita at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley.

Yellen was appointed to her post on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in 1994 and served in that capacity until 1997. During this period, she was required to take a leave of absence from her position at the University of California, Berkeley. After that, she resigned from her job at the Fed and went on to serve as the chair of President Bill Clinton’s Council of Economic Advisers until 1999.

She served in that capacity until 1999. During this time, she was also the chairperson of the Economic Policy Committee of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) (OECD). Yellen relocated back to Berkeley in 1999 and remained a professor at the university until 2004 when she was presented with the opportunity to become the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. Within the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, in the year 2010, she was promoted to the position of vice chair.

After waiting an additional three years, President Barack Obama put her up as a candidate for the role of head of the Federal Reserve System. Her candidacy was met with some opposition, which was primarily driven by the belief held by many Republicans that she would place an excessive amount of importance on lowering unemployment while paying insufficient attention to containing inflation.

Her candidacy was met with some opposition, which was primarily driven by the belief held by many Republicans that she would place an excessive amount of importance on lowering unemployment In spite of this, she was confirmed by the United States Senate in January of 2014 with a vote of 56 to 26, which was the closest margin of approval ever given to a candidate for the position of head of the Federal Reserve System. Despite this, she was given the position of head of the Federal Reserve System.

The date of February 3, 2014, marked the beginning of her four-year term. Immediately after being sworn into office, Yellen started the process of reversing some of the policies that had been put in place as a direct response to the subprime mortgage crisis that had happened in 2008. The fact that she led a scheme to sell mortgage and Treasury bonds that the Federal Reserve had purchased in an effort to stimulate the economy is particularly noteworthy. This was done in an effort to stimulate the economy.

In spite of the fact that she maintained historically low-interest rates during her presidency, both employment and wage growth improved during that time. This was the case even though she worked to maintain historically low-interest rates. After President Donald Trump decided not to nominate Yellen for a second term as chairwoman of the Federal Reserve, she decided to step down from her post as chairperson of the Fed in February of 2018. After she resigned from her position, Jerome H. Powell was appointed to take on her previous responsibilities.

In the year 2020, the President-elect of the United States, Joe Biden, announced to the world his desire to nominate Yellen for the position of Secretary of the United States Department of the Treasury. In January of 2021, she was confirmed by the Senate with a vote of 84 to 15, which was an overwhelming majority. Yellen has honorary degrees from both Brown University and Bard College; she was a Doctor of Laws from Brown University and a Doctor of Humane Letters from Bard College.

Yellen was a member of the Federal Reserve Board. During the course of her academic career, she generated a significant amount of work on a wide variety of topics, concentrating the majority of her efforts on macroeconomics and the factors that influence unemployment rates. Her spouse, George A. Akerlof, is a co-winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics from the year 2001. He received the honor jointly with another economist.
