Jean Dujardin Biography and Career:

In 1996, Jean Dujardin rose to recognition for the first time as a member of the comedic ensemble Nous C Nous, who competed in the French talent competition Graines de Star. The following year, in 1999, he was cast in the main part of the French adaptation of the television comedy series Un gars, une fille, which he played until 2003.

This was his second significant role. After that, he started his career in French cinema, where he is most known for his portrayal of the want tobe surfer turned bank robber Brice de Nice in the film Brice de Nice (2005). In addition to that, Dujardin composed and performed the score for the movie.

On June 19, 1972, Jean Dujardin was born in the town of Rueil-Malmaison, located in the western suburbs of Paris. He got his start in the working world at his father’s company, where he was employed as a locksmith and glazier. After fulfilling his obligation to serve in the military, he moved to Paris to establish himself as a comedic performer in the city’s many bars and lounges.

Along with Bruno Salomone, Eric Collado, Eric Massot, and Emmanuel Joucla, he formed the band Nous à Nous, which became very successful and was featured often on French television in the program Fiesta hosted by Patrick Sébastien. His first taste of popularity came about due to his part as Loulou in the television series Un Gars, Une Fille, in which he starred opposite the woman who would later become his wife, Alexandra Lamy. He played the character from 1999 to 2003.

After achieving widespread fame due to his work in television, it was only a matter of time before Jean Dujardin achieved the same success in the film industry. His debut appearance in a film was in the anthology short titled ” l’abri des regards indiscrets” (2002), which was followed by a supporting role in the comedy titled “Oh! Si j’étais riche,” which he found particularly memorable (2002).

Dujardin demonstrated that he was equally at ease performing serious and humorous characters in the films Le Convoyeur (2004), directed by Nicolas Boukhrief, and Marriages! (2004) directed by Valérie Guignabodet. Then came his first big film triumph, Brice de Nice (2005), in which he repeated one of his character inventions from his early comedic routines.

This character was a gormless surfer suffering from stalled development. Brice de Nice was his first significant film success. The picture garnered an audience of more than four million people, and Dujardin became famous in France because of this movie.

The film OSS 117: Le Caire nid d’espions, directed by Michel Hazanavicius, catapulted Jean Dujardin to international renown, where he played the major role in the parody of a spy thriller (2006). Not only did this picture increase the visibility of Jean Dujardin outside of France, but it also garnered him his first nomination for a César.

Dujardin gave the impression of being untouched by the meteoric rise to a celebrity that he had experienced, preferring to offer his skills to outlandish freaks rather than more predictable material such as Jan Kounen’s 99 francs (2007). He went against the grain of his humorous reputation by taking on more complicated dramatic parts, such as the strong but emotionally fragile officer in Franck Mancuso’s thriller Contre-enquête (2007) and a guy who is plagued by a previous love in Nicole Garcia’s Un balcon sur la mer (2010).

His comedic roles expanded to include France’s most famous comic book cowboy in James Huth’s Lucky Luke (2009) and an alcoholic writer worried by his disease (in human form) in Bertrand Blier’s Le Bruit des glacons. These performances were in films directed by Bertrand Blier (2010).

Subsequently, as George Valentin in Michel Hazanavicius’s homage to the Golden Age of Hollywood, The Artist Jean Dujardin was cast in a part that gained him worldwide renown and superstar status (2011), although it was a silent black-and-white picture; this movie was a huge success all over the globe and earned Jean Dujardin many accolades. While several Frenchmen, such as Charles Boyer and Maurice Chevalier, have earned honorary Oscars to appreciate their life work, Jean Dujardin is the only French actor.

Jean Dujardin debuted as a filmmaker in 2012 with the film Les Infidèles (2012). In this film, he directed one of a series of provocatively bawdy skits in which he acts with Gilles Lellouche. After starring in the sophisticated romantic thriller Mobius (2013) directed by Eric Rochant, Dujardin made his debut in Hollywood the same year, starring in The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) directed by Martin Scorsese, and The Monuments Men (2013) directed by George Clooney (2013).
