Jim McMahon Biography and Career:

James Robert McMahon Jr., a former American football quarterback who spent 15 seasons in the National Football League (NFL), most notably with the Chicago Bears, was born on August 21, 1959. He participated in collegiate football at BYU, where he earned the Davey O’Brien Award and Sammy Baugh Trophy as a senior.

In the 1982 NFL Draft, the Bears selected him fifth overall. McMahon’s 1985 Bears squad, which won the team’s first Super Bowl championship in Super Bowl XX, was when he experienced the greatest level of professional achievement.

Throughout the season, he was also named to the Pro Bowl. McMahon, though, battled ailments for the rest of his career after sustaining a shoulder injury the following season. McMahon played for the Chicago Bears for seven years before joining the San Diego Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles, Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, and Green Bay Packers.

At Roy High School, where he played his junior and senior years, he graduated in 1977. McMahon was chosen by the Chicago Bears in the fifth overall spot in the first round of the 1982 NFL Draft. McMahon walked into his first public event with the Bears with a cool beer, ecstatic to leave what he perceived to be a constricting mentality at BYU.

Neither Bears owner and founding father George Halas nor head coach Mike Ditka were impressed. McMahon would frequently argue with Ditka throughout his seven years with the Bears and would find the culture in Chicago to be almost as difficult as that at Brigham Young.

In spite of the NFL only having played two games prior to a players’ strike that resulted in the cancellation of nearly half the season, McMahon won the Bears’ starting quarterback job as a rookie in 1982 and was chosen to multiple All-Rookie teams.
