Jim Pattison Biography and Career:

In 1928, Jim Pattison was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. At the turn of the century, his American parents’ relatives traveled north of the border to homestead in Canada. In those days, the government of Canada would provide farms to homesteaders in exchange for ten years of hard labor on the land. Pattison’s father, who at the time was a partner in a car business in Luseland, suffered complete financial devastation due to the Great Depression.

Pattison’s family was uprooted and relocated to Vancouver, where Pattison’s father found work fixing pianos on commission at each of their neighbors’ homes. To assist his father, Pattison went along on the service calls that his father was responsible for, and in the evenings, his mother taught him at home. They were paying $2 per month to rent a room in an attic that was fully equipped.

Pattison’s family made Vancouver their permanent home when he was six years old, and his father found work there selling secondhand automobiles. An energetic young, Pattison started his career by going into business for himself. At first, he sold garden seeds, and then he moved on to selling subscriptions to the Saturday Evening Post and Ladies Home Journal.

Later on, he worked as a swamper, which is a person who is responsible for throwing papers out of trucks to newsies. In addition to that, he had a job as a page boy at a hotel. He started working as a truck driver for the late edition newspapers when he was old enough to operate a vehicle legally.

Through hard effort, Pattison earned all his degrees from the University of British Columbia. While he was a first-year student, he had a job on a dining car of a train as a pantryman. After that, he got a job at a dealership responsible for cleaning secondhand automobiles. He started by restoring secondhand automobiles and selling them to students for $150 apiece.

He made a profit of up to $50 for each vehicle. Pattison dropped out of school when he was just nine units away from completing his degree to take up a full-time management position at a used auto dealership.

Pattison was born on board by his employer when the latter purchased a GM dealership and asked him to oversee the pre-owned vehicle sales department. It took him a while, but he eventually became the dealership’s general manager, earning him an additional $6,000 yearly for his efforts. Pattison was there one day when a client walked in and informed him the customer wanted someone to oversee his pots and pans company, assuring the customer $50,000 each year.

Pattison was passionate about the automobile industry but felt he could not refuse that kind of money. “I discovered that merely making a lot of money is not enough to be successful. To find joy in life, you need to be sincerely interested in what you do. I managed salespeople for a company that sold pots and pans and earned $51,000 that year, but I ended up going back to work for my former general manager for $12,000 a year since that was where my heart was.

Pattison bought his own GM dealership in 1961 when he was 32. He did this by taking out loans on his life insurance and property and borrowing the remaining money from GM. After another four years, he invested in a radio station that had financial difficulties. The Jim Pattison Group was designated the largest corporation in Canada held by a single individual in 1986 when the firm’s revenues topped one billion Canadian dollars.

Pattison served as chairman, president, and chief executive officer of the World’s Fair Expo 86 in Vancouver, Canada, the same year. This event brought visitors from 56 countries and 22 million people to the city and raised more money from corporate donations than the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Pattison still holds the positions of chairman, chief executive officer, and sole owner of The Jim Pattison Group, Canada’s second most prominent privately owned firm. His business holdings include television and radio stations, automobile dealerships, grocery store chains, magazine distribution, advertising, real estate development, fishing, financial services, and various entertainment venues, including Ripley’s Believe It or Not! & Guinness World Records—all employ a combined total of 33,000 individuals.

In 1987, Pattison was appointed to the Order of Canada, and in 1990, he was appointed to the Order of British Columbia. In 1992, he was honored with the Governor General’s Commemorative Medal in recognition of Canada’s 125th year as a nation.

Both the Canadian Business Hall of Fame and the Business Laureates of British Columbia Hall of Fame have recognized his achievements and admitted him into their halls of fame. Pattison was awarded the Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012, which was given to honor Queen Elizabeth on her 60th birthday.
