Towards the beginning of his career, he took over for Bruce Hoffman as the Nomads’ bass player. His musical career continued at Kent State University, where he enrolled after graduating high school. He attended college with an English major and a music minor. He left school to concentrate on his singing career.

Between 1965 to 1967, he was a member of The Measles, and between 1968 and 1971, he was a member of James Gang. The group’s self-titled debut album was released in 1969. From 1971 through 1975, he was a member of the Colorado-based band Barnstorm. He replaced Bernie Leadon with the Eagles and joined the band in 1975. Hotel California, the band’s fifth studio album, was a worldwide hit when it was released in 1976. One of the most recognizable songs ever, “Hotel California,” dominated the charts in May of 1977. Albums “Living in the Fast Lane” and “The Long Run” included booming riffs by Walsh. Walsh’s 1974 album “So What” was his debut as a solo artist.

You Can’t Argue with a Sick Mind, his 1976 live album, was named after one of his songs. But Really, People” was a breakthrough for him in 1978. His latest studio album, “Songs for a Dying Planet,” was issued in 1992, though he did release a solo album, “One Day at a Time,” in 2012. They resumed their tours in 1999 and 2001, with further releases of multiple recordings. In 2003, they published “The Very Best Of,” and in 2005; they released “Farewell 1 Tour-Live from Melbourne,” which featured two new songs. His next musical endeavor was with the Cleveland, Ohio, hard rock trio, the James Gang, with whom he recorded their self-titled debut album. The James Gang Rides Again, released in 1970, was the group’s commercial breakthrough, spawning the FM radio hit “Funk #49.” Despite the success of their second album, Thirds, which featured the timeless hit “Walk Away,” Walsh eventually departed the James Gang because he felt trapped by the group’s power trio formula.

Moving to Colorado, Walsh started a new band called Barnstorm and released an album in 1972. In 1973, he released his first genuine solo album, The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get. With the help of the radio smash “Rocky Mountain Way,” the album broke into the Top Ten; in 1974, it was followed by So What. After the success of 1976’s You Can’t Argue with a Sick Mind, guitarist Bernie Leadon left the Eagles and was replaced by Joe Walsh, who debuted with the band on their platinum-selling Hotel California album.

But Really, People… was the next album in his solo career, which he also pursued. The album’s standout track, 1978’s “Life’s Been Good,” a dead-on portrayal of rock star hedonism, became his biggest commercial smash, coming close to the Top 10. Walsh declared his candidacy for President of the United States in 1979 and promised “free gas for everyone” if he were elected (he was not). That same year saw the release of The Long Run, the Eagles’ final studio album.

Walsh’s next solo hit, “All Night Long,” was featured on the soundtrack to the 1980 film Urban Cowboy and peaked in the Top 20 that summer. Despite having his last Top 40 entry, “A Life of Illusion,” appear on 1981’s There Goes the Neighborhood, he continued recording steadily, reappearing in 1983 with You Bought It: You Name It and issuing The Confessor two years later. Walsh made yet another unsuccessful run for vice president during that time.

Sticking to the success of Have Any Gum? He returned to his solo career with 1991’s Ordinary Average Man after touring with Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band. He hit the road with the resurrected Eagles on their massive Hell Freezes Over tour in 1994 and continued to perform alone for years afterward. Walsh released his debut solo album in 2012, following years of touring and songwriting with the Eagles and working with legendary producer Jeff Lynne (of Electric Light Orchestra) and Beatles drummer Ringo Starr. The album’s title, “Analog Man,” alludes to Walsh’s struggles at age 64 to adapt to the new digital recording standard and society’s rapid technological advancement.

After graduating from Kent State University in the mid-1960s, Walsh played in various local Ohio bands before breaking through to a broader audience as a member of the James Gang, with whom he recorded the hit single “Funk #49,” which showcased his talents as a guitarist and singer. Cleveland promoter and artist manager Roger Abramson inked a management deal with BPI on behalf of the James Gang.

After quitting the James Gang in 1972, Walsh founded Barnstorm with college classmate Joe Vitale from Ohio and Colorado-based bassist Kenny Passarelli. During three years, the band recorded three albums presented as solo efforts from Walsh. Some members of the Eagles, who had recently hired Walsh’s producer, Bill Szymczyk, contributed significantly to the final Barnstorm album, 1974’s So What.
