John Hayes Biography and Career:

Sir John Hayes (1768-1831), naval commander and explorer, was born on February 11, 1768, in Bridekirk, Cumberland, England, the son of Fletcher Hayes, of Tallentire on the River Derwent. He was the son of Fletcher Hayes, of Tallentire on the River Derwent. He joined the Bombay Marine as a midshipman on the Bombay on December 7, 1781, when he was thirteen years old (Commodore Empson). Initially a second lieutenant in December 1788, Hayes was advanced to temporary commodore in July 1805, a position that he held until his participation in the seizure of Java in 1811 earned him the permanent title of commodore. His career began as a deputy master attendant in Calcutta in 1806 and as a senior captain the following year. He was elevated to master-attendant in 1809 and given a seat on the Marine Board, from which he was expelled in 1812 due to his incendiary conduct. In 1816, he was promoted to the rank of senior officer in the Bombay Marine.

Hayes was awarded the K.B. for his efforts during the Burma War. Because he believed that East India Company men had received less recognition from the British government than men of the regular army for their services in the numerous engagements against French and Dutch forces between 1793 and 1815, he took this honour lightly, even painting his patent green to show his displeasure. Hayes served as an adventurous and capable naval commander throughout his entire life, taking part in wars against Tippoo Sahib in 1782-1792, the siege of Ternate in 1801-02, the conquest of Java in 1811, and the Burma war in 1824-1826.

A private expedition performed by Hayes between February 1792 and December 1794 is what he is most renowned for, notwithstanding his distinguished military career. After hearing glowing reports about New Guinea’s economic prospects from John McCluer, a fellow officer, Hayes was appointed to head an expedition supported by a group of businessmen from Calcutta. The Duke of Clarence (with a cargo of 250 tonnes) and the Duchess of Bengal (with a cargo of 100 tonnes) departed India on February 6, 1793.

Hayes was unable to sail directly to New Guinea due to bad weather, so he opted to circumnavigate the island of New Holland. He arrived at Adventure Bay on April 24 and departed Van Diemen’s Land on June 9, having arrived on April 24. The Derwent River was found and named during this time period, and he may have explored it all the way to New Norfolk, as well as describing the characteristics of the area. Risdon Cove and Cornelian Bay are still known by the names he gave them when he first discovered them.

Hayes continued on to New Caledonia and the Louisiade Archipelago, where he was likely the first European to land on and communicate with the people of Rossel Island in July 1793, before landing his crews, who were suffering from scurvy, at Dorey Harbour in early September. Hayes was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1793. Hayes officially acquired ownership of the property, which he named New Albion, on October 25, 1793. He sailed out from Dorey on December 22, leaving behind a party of settlers and the unseaworthy Duchess, and made stops at Bouro, Kupang, Surabaya and Batavia along the way.

After meeting with the Bengal Squadron and presumably being directed to Canton for a covert mission, he was able to successfully sell the cargo he had brought to the port of New Albion. On the 5th of December, 1794, he was able to return to Calcutta. The endeavour had been a financial success, but it had been a disappointment in all other aspects. Hayes discovered that the French under the command of Bruny d’Entrecasteaux had been at the Derwent estuary only a few hours before he arrived.

The corporation refused to administrate New Albion or to print more than thirty copies of his journal, and he was forced to leave the country. The manuscript’s whereabouts are now unknown. After being rejected by the corporation, Hayes may have transported the manuscript to England in the hopes of finding a publisher there, but the ship carrying it was captured by the French. Hayes was dissatisfied with the company’s attitude toward his journey, but he continued in its job until his death on the Cocos Islands on July 3, 1831. On August 17, 1795, he tied the knot with Catherine Payne in the New Church in Calcutta, and the couple went on to have four children.
