John Hodgman Biography and Career:
John Kellogg Hodgman is a comedic author, actor, and comedian born in the United States on June 3, 1971. In addition to the written works he has published under his name, such as The Areas of My Expertise, More Information Than You Require, and That Is All, he is best known for his role as the personification of a personal computer (PC) in Apple’s “Get a Mac” advertising campaign, in contrast to Justin Long’s role as the personification of a personal computer (Mac), and for his work as a contributor on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
One tale (to which he gave the debut tale “Villanova”), The Paris Review, McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern, Wired, and The New York Times Magazine, for which he is editor of the humor section, are some of the publications that have featured his works. He has written for This American Life and the show Wiretap on CBC Radio One.
In 2005, he had his first book, The Areas of My Expertise, a satirical tongue-in-cheek almanac, released along with an accompanying audio narration. The book is virtually entirely devoid of factual information and is written in a tongue-in-cheek tone. On October 21, 2008, his second book, More Information Than You Require, was released to the public. That Is All, his third book, was released to bookstores on November 1, 2011.
On October 24, 2017, a book titled Vacationland: True Stories from Painful Beaches was released. This book is a compilation of “real life wanderings” written by Hodgman about his life experiences, particularly those in Western Massachusetts and coastal Maine. The book “Vacationland” made it to the final round of consideration for the Thurber Prize for American Humour in 2018. On October 17, 2019, his most recent novel, Medallion Status, was made available to the public.
Hodgman was the featured speaker at the Radio and Television Correspondents Association dinner in Washington, District of Columbia, in 2009. In 1994, Hodgman received his Bachelor of Arts in Literature from Yale University, where he concentrated his studies on literary criticism. Before becoming a writer, Hodgman worked as a literary agent at Writers House in New York City. While there, he represented several notable authors and actors, including Darin Strauss, Deborah Digges, and Bruce Campbell. Among his other clients were the authors and actors.
In his column titled “Ask a Former Professional Literary Agent,” published at McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, Hodgman uses the knowledge and expertise he gained while working at an agency. On November 16, 2005, Hodgman appeared on The Daily Show to promote his book, The Areas of My Expertise. Jon Stewart, the show host, referred to the book as “very funny” and said that the chapter on hobo names in particular, was written with “a certain kind of genius.”
Hodgman has been on The Daily Show several times for “resident expert” interview segments, and the show’s website acknowledges him as a contributor. In 2005, Hodgman appeared as a figure known as “The Deranged Millionaire” in the DVD/CD release of They Might Be Giants’ Venue Songs. He also narrated in between songs using dialogue that he and the band had co-written together. On April 2, 2014, the “Deranged Millionaire” figure also appeared on “The Daily Show.”
In addition, he introduced the band while playing the character of The Deranged Millionaire up until May 16, 2007, as well as narrating many setlists that were centred on the concept of Venue Songs throughout the band’s live performances in 2005. On December 11, 2009, Hodgman made another appearance on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, this time performing with They Might Be Giants.
In February of 2006, Hodgman appeared on Attack of the Show, a program broadcast daily on G4, to promote his book The Areas of My Expertise and share some of his knowledge with the show’s host. Jonathan Coulton, a frequent Hodgman collaborator and musical director of the Little Grey Book lectures, accompanied Hodgman during this appearance. Hodgman related the tragic story of the lobster, which he claimed was a small, furry, extinct species, killed and replaced by the creatures we think of as lobsters today.
During the performance, Coulton sang “Furry Old Lobster.”In addition, Hodgman made a second appearance on Attack of the Show on October 18, 2008, to discuss his most recent book, More Information Than You Require. Hodgman was featured in Apple Inc.’s Get a Mac advertising campaign during its North American run, which began in May 2006 and continued through 2010. In the commercials, he portrays the embodiment of a PC, while actor Justin Long performs as the incarnation of a Mac.
Hodgman began using a Macintosh computer for the first time in 1984. At the 45:27 mark of Apple’s virtual “One More Thing” event, which took place on November 10, 2020, he made a surprise appearance for a short period. This was when Apple unveiled its first Macs based on its own Apple silicon chips. Hodgman appeared as a guest star in the episode of the HBO television series Flight of the Conchords titled “Bowie” in 2007.
He took on the role of the manager of a musical greeting card firm, which was debating whether or not to include one of the band’s songs in a card design. Xeni Jardin of Boing Boing announced that the online series SPAMasterpiece Theatre would be making its formal debut on October 1, 2008. Hodgman referred to it as “true tales of romance, adventure, infamy, and low-cost prescription drugs, all culled from the reams of actual, unsolicited emails received here by us and people like you – what we call SPAM.” Hodgman defined it as “true tales of romance, adventure, infamy, and low-cost prescription drugs.”
