John Hurt Biography and Career:

John Hurt was born on January 22, 1940, in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, to Phyllis and Arnould Herbert Hurt. His mother was an actress and engineer by hobby, and his father was a mathematician who became a minister in the Church of England. He was even the pastor of Shirebrook and St. John’s parish in Sunderland.

Hurt’s family moved to South Derbyshire when he was five years old. His father became the vicar of St. Stephen’s Church in Woodville. Hurt grew up in a strict household. He couldn’t watch movies or play with local kids, so he had to live by himself. He became interested in acting while he was at the Anglican St. Michael’s Preparatory School in Otford, Kent. In his later years, Hurt wanted to make a living as an actor, but his parents were against it.

Instead, they told him to become a teacher of art. At 17, he signed up to go to the Grimsby Art School to study art. In 1959, Hurt won a scholarship that paid for him to go to London’s Saint Martin School of Art and get a diploma in art. Hurt couldn’t get another scholarship, so he went back to what he loved most, which was acting.

Hurt went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1960 on a scholarship (RADA). In it, he spent two years going to school to learn how to act. John Hurt was an English actor with a lot of talent who was in some of the best movies and TV shows ever made in Britain. He was nominated for a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor because of how well he played the part of Evans. Even though Hurt was known for his work on stage and in movies, his skills were not fully used. When he started acting on TV, that’s when he really started to show how good he was. He got a chance to show what a great actor he was and how much he could do on camera.
