John Lasseter Biography and Career:

John Alan Lasseter was born on January 12, 1957, in Hollywood, California, United States, into the household of Paul Lasseter and Jewell Mae, who belonged to the upper-middle class and practiced orthodox Christianity. His mother was a teacher at the local high school, where she specialized in teaching art. His father was employed at a dealership outlet for the ‘Chevrolet brand. John and Johanna, his twin sister, had their childhood together; Johanna is really a few minutes older than John.

During his formative years in Whittier, California, he and his family had a consistent religious practice of going to church. Because of the work that John’s mother did, he developed a growing fascination with the idea of going into the animation industry. As a child, he was a huge fan of the well-known American animator Chuck Jones and used to enjoy watching many of the animated shows that he had created on television. He was a huge supporter of animated cartoons, especially those starring Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck.

When he was still in high school, he sent a letter to “Walt Disney Studios” with the hopes of landing a job there after graduation. On the other hand, nothing occurred. The book “The Art of Animation” by animator Bob Thomas was one of the books that he read. The book included a narrative of the making of the Disney animated feature “The Sleeping Beauty,” which served as a significant source of inspiration for him.

When it came time for him to graduate from high school, he was quite certain that he wanted to work in animation. Because his mother was active in the creative community, he had his mother’s undivided support. He enrolled in the ‘California Institute of the Arts and took part in the character animation program there. John was one of the first students to enroll in the ‘Disney animation course when it was initially offered at the institution in the early 1970s, and he was also one of the first students to sign up for the courses.

In his class were students who would go on to have careers as animators, such as Tim Burton and Brad Bird. He feels that he gained new perspectives as a result of having gone through it. Both of his student films, “Lady and the Lamp” and “Nitemare,” were honored with an “Academy Award” from the student level. The moment he walked onto the stage to get his diploma in 1979, he was quickly employed by ‘Disney.’ During the summers that he spent away from school, he had a job at Disneyland in Anaheim.

This happened while he was still attending college. After he had his degree, he continued doing this work on a full-time basis. In the late 1970s, the television program “Disney” came under fire for allegedly being repetitive and failing to provide its viewers with any new or interesting information. The corporation started aggressively employing people in order to fill the need for fresh talent. In a short amount of time, 10,000 applications were submitted. “Disney” selected 150 of them for further consideration, but only 45 were offered full-time positions as animators.

John was one of those individuals.
