John Piper Biography and Career:
In the city of Chattanooga in Tennessee, John Piper was born to his parents, Bill and Ruth Piper. Because of his father’s work as an evangelist and church planter, his mother did most of the childrearing while he was growing up. The family relocated to Greenville, South Carolina, where he attended Wade Hampton High School and ultimately earned his diploma. Between the years 1964 and 1968, he was a student at Wheaton College, where he majored in literature and philosophy and also studied Romantic Literature.
During his time at the university, he signed up for the Pre-med program; nevertheless, he ultimately decided to pursue a career in the ministry and received a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Fuller Theological Seminar in California. After that, he went on to get a Ph.D. in New Testament Studies at the University of Munich in Germany, where he had first enrolled. After receiving his Ph.D. degree, he started teaching Biblical Studies at Bethel University and Seminary from the years 1974 through 1980. His tenure there spanned the decades 1974–1980.
In 1980, he was called to serve as the Pastor of the Baptist Church located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1986, he published the book “Desiring God: Meditations of a Christian Hedonist.” His theological perspectives were widened, and he started writing a number of additional publications with the theme of “Christian Hedonism.” In the year 1994, he established what is now known as “Desiring God Ministries.” This organization distributed all of Piper’s lectures, sermons, and other informational presentations on theological topics in the form of CDs, DVDs, and even through the internet.
In August of 2009, Piper had the conviction that a brief tornado that struck while she was attending a conference was really a message from God. He connected the tornado with a contentious blog post about homosexuality that he had written about the same topic and posted on his site. Initially, readers responded negatively to his message; but, in subsequent comments, they praised it as a “bold” move.
Between the 1st of May in 2010 to the 9th of January in 2011, he took a sabbatical from the ministry. During this period, he concentrated on writing a lot of novels and also took use of the opportunity to travel all over the globe. On May 20, 2012, Jason Meyer was chosen by the congregation to take over as pastor from John Piper. On March 31, 2013, he delivered the last homily of his career as the pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church, before resigning from active ministry for good. It was during this address that he made the announcement that he and his family would be moving away from the church for the next year so that the new pastor could work without being distracted by the previous pastor’s presence.
The books ‘Counted Righteous in Christ,’ ‘Think About These Things,’ ‘The Hidden Smile of God,’ and ‘The Misery of Job and the Mercy of God are among his most recent works to be published. In 1994, he established “Desiring God Ministries,” a nonprofit organization that makes all of his sermons, publications, and essays available for purchase or for free online and in print. For the convenience of his fellow “Christian Hedonists,” he has also made his sermons accessible on DVD and CD. Because he views his work in the ministry as the “primary labor of his life,” this is regarded to be one of his most significant contributions. As a result of his work with this organization, he has been able to affect the lives of more than 2 billion individuals all over the globe.
In the course of his life, he has written a number of books, but one in particular, titled “Desiring God: Meditations of a Christian Hedonist,” was released in 1986 and went on to become a best-seller in addition to winning the ECPA Christian Book Award. During his lifetime, he has authored a number of books. His book “The Passion of Jesus Christ,” which was published in 2004, not only won the ECPA Christian Book Award but was also considered his magnum opus because it elaborated on the magnificent truths of the gospel and supported them with theological evidence, which was something that was uncommon at the time.
In 1968, he wed a Wheaton classmate named Noel Henry, and the couple went on to have four boys, a daughter, and twelve grandchildren. Piper enjoys using his leisure time to read works of literature and also uses this time to compose poetry that he may recite at special events or occasions within the family. On January 11, 2006, he received a diagnosis of prostate cancer; two weeks later, on February 14, 2006, he had surgery to treat the disease.
One of the books written by this well-known theologian, Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die, became not only a best-seller but also a controversial publication due to the fact that it detailed fifty different arguments to support the proposition that Jesus Christ died on the cross for the benefit of his people. John Piper, the senior pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church, is committed to preaching the life and teachings of Jesus Christ via the internet, the radio, and the pulpit where he preaches. Piper also serves as the senior pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
Over the course of his career, he has written more than fifty books, and in recent years, he has been lecturing often all over the globe on the subject of God’s preeminence. In addition to the religious activities he participates in, he writes poetry on a regular basis to celebrate important family milestones and also creates story poems for the people who attend Advent church services every year. After completing his Ph.D. in New Testament Studies at the University of Munich, he went on to establish himself as one of the most important and famous theologians in contemporary times across the globe.
