Jon Batiste was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, into the illustrious Batiste family, and he attended the world-famous Juilliard School in New York City for his musical education. There, he founded the band known as Stay Human, which rose to prominence due to the musical talent of its members and the “love riots” that were the band’s characteristic street performances.

Batiste’s talents as a pianist, composer, and conductor immediately made him one of the most sought-after collaborators and performers in the nation. He has performed at prestigious events like as the Grammy Awards, the Kennedy Center Honors, the US Open, and the NBA All-Star Game.

Jon was given the role of bandleader and musical director for the CBS show The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in the year 2015. As a result of Jon’s efforts on Soul, he was honored with not just a Critic’s Choice Award but also a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA Award, and an NAACP Image Award.

Jon was just the second black composer in the history of the Academy Awards to receive an Oscar for composition, following in the footsteps of the great jazz musician Herbie Hancock. WE ARE, Jon’s most recent studio album, was released in March 2021 and has received universally praise from music critics. Batiste received accolades from a variety of publications, including the New York Times, Rolling Stone, Billboard, and others, for the flexibility of the record, which he envisioned while processing the turbulent times of 2020.

Batiste’s virtuoso composition talents will soon be highlighted in his large-scale, genre-melding symphonic piece “American Symphony,” which is scheduled to debut at Carnegie Hall in May 2022. The deluxe version of the album was published in October 2021 and included six more songs.

Jon Batiste is a well-known American musician, bandleader, and television personality. He has collaborated in the studio and on stage with musicians from a wide range of musical genres, including Stevie Wonder, Prince, Willie Nelson, Lenny Kravitz, Ed Sheeran, and Mavis Staples. Since 2005, he has consistently released recordings, and he has performed in more than 40 different countries. Batiste goes on frequent tours with his band Stay Human, and he also serves as the Bandleader and Musical Director for the band when they appear on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert each night.

In addition to his work at The Atlantic, where he is the Music Director, Batiste is also the Creative Director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem. Jon Batiste came from a family of musicians that included his father Lionel Batiste and grandfather Harold Batiste. He was born in Kenner, Louisiana. At the age of eight, he joined the Batiste Brothers Band, which was the family band for which he played drums and percussion.

At the age of 11, he made the move from violin to piano after listening to his mother’s advice. Jon improved his ability to play the piano by studying and transcribing pieces from a variety of video games, including Street Fighter Alpha, Final Fantasy VII, and Sonic the Hedgehog.

Batiste published Times in New Orleans when he was only 17 years old. Following his graduation from the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts in 2004, he continued his education at the Juilliard School, where he earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree. He attended NOCCA alongside Trombone Shorty.

During his time at Juilliard, he put out his second CD, which was titled Life in New York: At the Rubin Museum of Art, in addition to having been a featured performer in South Africa, London, Lisbon, Spain, Paris, and the United States at the end of the year 2006.

Batiste made his debut in 2007 at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, where he was both the producer and performer of his own performance. He was just 20 years old at the time. He taught music in clinics, courses, and workshops all across the Netherlands, mostly in inner-city schools and communities of low socioeconomic status.

He was given the opportunity to create and play in his own concert at Carnegie Hall, which also featured the talents of six up-and-coming artists from the Netherlands. The concert came to a close with a finale that he had created, which included a jazz combo, orchestral instruments, and a choir.

In the year that followed, Batiste released a variety of musical projects, some of which include Social Music (2013), which dominated both the Billboard and iTunes jazz charts for more than a month, “The Late Show EP” (2016) with Stay Human and a Christmas album titled “Christmas with Jon Batiste” (2016).

In 2017, he collaborated with Leon Bridges and Gary Clark Jr. on the track “Ohio,” and he also recorded “Battle Hymn of the Republic” for The Atlantic. Both of these songs were published as singles. The first studio album by Batiste to be published under his own name, Hollywood Africans, was issued by Verve Records in September 2018.

The first song released from the album was titled “Don’t Stop.” In the weeks leading up to the album’s release, Batiste and The Dap-Kings performed at several summer festivals all throughout the United States.

Notable performances throughout Batiste’s career include a tribute to Chuck Berry and Fats Domino at the 60th annual Grammy Awards (performing alongside Gary Clark Jr.), a tribute to Carmen De Lavallade at the Kennedy Center Honors, the Concert for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama, as well as performing the National Anthem at the 2017 NBA All-Star Game and Opening Night of the 2017 US Open.

Batiste is now signed with Mick Management. He was the curator of the Global Citizen Advocacy Concert with Tom Morello and the Louis Armstrong Wonderful World Festival in Queens, New York. In 2005, Batiste started making frequent appearances throughout the New York music scene with two of his fellow Juilliard students, the bassist Phil Kuehn and the drummer Joe Saylor. Eddie Barbash on alto saxophone and Ibanda Ruhumbika on tuba subsequently joined his band as members.

Stay Human is the name of Batiste’s band, which gets its inspiration from the band’s members’ conviction that the presence of other people during a live musical performance may help people feel more connected to one another despite the “plug-in/tune-out” aspect of contemporary society. Batiste refers to the band’s unplanned street concerts as “love riots,” and they are led by the band.

The concept for the album MY N.Y., which was published in 2011 by Stay Human and was entirely recorded aboard New York City Subway trains, came to Batiste when he pondered the topic of how to connect with other people.
The band performed during the March for Science demonstration that took place at the Washington Monument in Washington, District of Columbia, on April 22, 2017.
