Jonathan Van Ness Biography and Career:

Jonathan Van Ness is an American hairdresser, podcaster, and television personality. He is most known as the grooming expert on the relaunched version of the Netflix series Queer Eye, which he co-stars with Antoni Porowski, Tan France, Karamo Brown, and Bobby Berk. Van Ness does not identify as either a man or a woman and is openly homosexual. Earlier in his career, he had succeeded with his online parody series, Gay of Thrones, which was modeled after the very successful HBO series Game of Thrones.

He is the presenter of the podcast Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness, and more recently, he contributed his voice to the original series Heads Will Roll that Audible produced. He made his debut as a writer with the release of his book titled Over the Top: A Raw Journey to Self-Love. During an interview, he disclosed that he is HIV + to combat the societal stigma of the condition.

After having a sexual encounter with a closeted child from his swim class and then being sexually molested by an older guy at church, he started to exhibit self-destructive behaviors, and this caused him to feel ashamed.

As a young teenager, he often spent countless hours trying to meet new people in AOL chat rooms. Sometimes, he would even offer sex to much older men than himself. Because he was so eager to leave his hometown, he worked hard during his junior year of high school to earn additional credits. This allowed him to bypass his senior year of high school and enroll immediately in college.

He was awarded a scholarship for cheering at the University of Arizona, where he planned to spend a semester studying political science. However, he disregarded his studies in favor of watching television and squandered his stipend on cocaine. After being thrown off the cheering team, he signed up for another semester, only to drop out of school at the last minute to become a hairdresser. He then returned to selling his sexual services in exchange for money.

After graduating, he decided to study at the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis. However, his parents would not fund the tuition, so he was forced to take a Federal Student Aid Program (FAFSA) loan and work at Sun Places Tanning Solutions. When Jonathan Van Ness was 15 years old, he got his first work, instructing children in gymnastics at a summer camp at the community college in his hometown. He continued to perform this job for the next several summers after that.

Even though he was the only brother who did not join the family company, his second job was to work in the circulation department of the family newspaper, where he was responsible for resolving consumer complaints and subscriptions. In 2005 and 2006, he worked as a hairdresser at Aveda and earned most of his pocket money from tips. However, he eventually moved to Arizona without completing his training and worked as a hairdresser in Phoenix and Scottsdale for five years.

In 2009, he made the impulsive decision to go to Los Angeles without any preparations. He got employment as an assistant at Sally Hershberger, but the money was inadequate, so he spent most weekends in Arizona. In 2012, he worked in a salon when he abruptly passed out while applying highlights to a customer’s hair. The following day, after feeling flu-like symptoms, he went to Planned Parenthood to be tested, and the results showed that he was HIV positive.

He decided to “get clean” from his drug usage and, at the same time, began a new chapter in his professional life by “co-founding” the hair salon MoJoHair with Monique Northrop in November 2013. The funding for this new endeavor came from a family trust. In 2013, when Jonathan Van Ness was styling the hair of his friend Erin Gibson, a director for the comedy syndicate Funny or Die, he casually performed a high-energy review of Game of Thrones.
