Jordan Henderson Biography and Career:
Jordan Brian Henderson (born 17 June 1990) is an English professional footballer who plays as the captain of Premier League side Liverpool. He was born in Liverpool, England. He also represents England at the international level, and he is often used as a center midfielder for both club and country. Henderson started his professional career with Sunderland in 2008, followed by a loan stint with Coventry City in 2009, before joining Liverpool in 2011. Henderson has played for the Reds since 2011.
Following the retirement of Steven Gerrard as captain of Liverpool, he was appointed to the position in 2015. Henderson was awarded his first cap for England in 2010, after previously representing and captaining the under-21 squad of the country. He has represented his nation in both the UEFA Euro 2012 and the FIFA World Cup in Brazil in 2014.
Henderson was born in Sunderland, Tyne, and Wear, and began his football career with his local club Sunderland when he was eight years old. On the first of July, 2008, he signed a professional deal with the club. In 1 November 2008, he came on as a half-time replacement in Sunderland’s 5–0 away loss to Chelsea, marking his first league appearance for them. When Sunderland took on Blackburn Rovers in the League Cup, he made his first start and made his home debut for the club.
Henderson joined Championship team Coventry City on a one-month loan agreement in January 2009 after being released by Liverpool. He made his Coventry debut in a 2–1 loss to Derby County on his first day. In February 2009, Henderson’s loan at Coventry City was extended until the end of the season, and he scored his first senior goal for the Sky Blues against Norwich City on 28 February 2009. After suffering a fracture to the fifth metatarsal bone in his foot, he was forced to return to Sunderland for treatment in April 2009.
Henderson broke into the Sunderland first team during the 2009–10 season, and he went on to make multiple Premier League appearances. A-League Cup third-round match against Birmingham City provided him with his first senior goal for the club, which he scored in the process. He subsequently went on to score his first Premier League goal against Manchester City on December 19, 2009, marking his debut in the competition.
On 23 April 2010, Henderson signed a new five-year contract with the club, which will keep him at the club until 2015. Henderson spent the majority of the season on the right side of midfield, but he also played centrally in the absence of Lee Cattermole. His versatility and consistency earned him a new five-year contract with the club, which will keep him at the club until 2015.
He went on to win the Sunderland Young Player of the Year title for the 2009–10 season as a result of his achievements. Henderson was named as one of the top 13 young players to watch in 2011 on the official FIFA website on January 13, 2011. The Sunderland youngster was awarded the club’s Young Player of the Year for the second season in a row.
Henderson joined Liverpool on the 9th of June 2011 for an unknown amount, which is believed to be between £16 and £20 million. He made his Premier League debut in Liverpool’s opening game of the 2011–12 season, a 1–1 draw against his previous club Sunderland, in which he received a mixed welcome from the home crowd. On August 27, 2011, Henderson scored his first goal for Liverpool in a Premier League match at Anfield against Bolton Wanderers.
It was Henderson’s first goal for the club. During Liverpool’s 2012 Football League Cup Final triumph against Cardiff City on February 26, 2012, Henderson began on the right side of midfield before coming off the bench in the 58th minute. In the 2012 FA Cup Final, he played the whole 90 minutes as Liverpool was defeated 2–1 by Chelsea on May 5, 2012. Despite making 44 appearances, Henderson only scored two goals in the 2011–12 season.
