Joe Keery was born on April 24, 1992, in Newburyport, Massachusetts, a small coastal, scenic, and historic city in Essex County. Laura Keery and Thomas R. Keery II are his parents. He has four sisters, including Kate and Emma, who are twins. Keery attended River Valley Charter School before moving on to Newburyport High School.
Having had a lifelong interest in the performing arts, he enrolled in Theatre in the Open, a well-known performing arts camp held at Maudslay State Park in Newburyport. The time he spent at the camp cemented his love of performing, and he continued acting in high school after one of his sisters insisted. He then went on to DePaul University’s Theatre School, where he graduated in 2014.
In May 2017, Keery began dating actress and professional kiteboarder Maika Monroe. She accompanied him to the’Stranger Things 2′ premiere. They will co-star in the upcoming film ‘Shotgun.’ Joe Keery auditioned for over a hundred different roles after graduating. Initially, he appeared in commercials for brands such as KFC, Domino’s, and Amiibo. In late 2015, Keery auditioned for the role of Jonathan Byers on ‘Stranger Things,’ which ultimately went to Charlie Heaton. Keery is pursuing a parallel career in music in addition to acting. He plays guitar and is a member of the Chicago-based garage and psych-rock band ‘Post Animal.’ Dalton Allison (bass), Jake Hirshland (guitar/keyboard), Javi Reyes (guitar), Wesley Toledo (drums), and Matt Williams are the other members of the band (guitar).
While Keery is an important member of the band, his acting schedule prevents him from touring with them. To date, they have released an extended play, ‘Post Animal Perform The Most Curious Water Activities,’ (2015), as well as one collection of singles, ‘The Garden Series,’ (2016).
