Julie Bindel Biography and Career:

Writer and radical feminist Julie Bindel hails from the United Kingdom. In addition, she is one of the co-founders of the law reform organization Justice for Women. The mission of this organization is to assist women charged with attacking or murdering abusive male partners.

Since 1979, she has been an active participant in the global movement to put an end to violence against women and children. She has also published significant work on rape, domestic violence, sexually motivated murder, prostitution and trafficking, child sexual exploitation, stalking, and the rise of religious fundamentalism and the harm it causes to women and girls. Julie is a frequent guest on both radio and television, where she gives her viewpoint.

During her career, Julie has written over 30 book chapters and reports on various issues about the mistreatment of women and girls. Julie is a co-founder of Justice for Women, established in 1990 as a response to cases of spousal homicide in which men killed their female partners and were given sympathy and understanding by judges and jurors. This was in contrast to cases of women who killed their male partners or ex-partners after suffering domestic violence and abuse and were punished disproportionately by the criminal justice system.

Bindel’s study on violence against women in intimate and domestic relationships has been essential to her work. Justice for Women (JFW) is a feminist law-reform group that campaigns against laws that discriminate against women in cases involving male violence against partners. Bindel co-founded JFW with her partner, Harriet Wistrich, a solicitor, and Hilary McCollum.

Bindel is the president of the group. In 1995, E. Jane Dickson of The Independent stated that the organization was being operated out of the house of Bindel, Wistrich, and their dog, Peggy. Peggy performed “her part for the cause by growling like Cerberus at the approach of a male footfall,” according to Dickson’s article.

JFW was founded in 1991 and was formerly known as the Free Sara Thornton movement. Its primary objective was to gain Sara Thornton’s release from prison after she had been convicted of killing her abusive husband the previous year. JFW was started in sympathy with Southall Black Sisters, who were working on releasing Kiranjit Ahluwalia, who was convicted in 1989 of killing her husband. JFW was started to show solidarity with Southall Black Sisters.

Emma Humphreys was one of the first clients that JFW ever worked with. After murdering her abusive pimp partner in 1985, when Humphreys was just 17 years old, she was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison. In September 1992, she sent a letter to JFW requesting assistance while incarcerated.

She appealed the conviction with their service, alleging that she had been subjected to long-term provocation, a landmark decision at the time. As the judges ruled that Humphreys be freed, news reporters on July 7, 1995, captured images of Humphreys, Bindel, and Wistrich holding hands while standing on the steps of the Old Bailey.

With the untimely passing of Emma Humphreys, for whom Justice for Women fought, Julie co-founded the Emma Humphreys Memorial prize in the year 1998. In 2015, Julie was elected to the board of directors of SPACE International, a worldwide organization working to eradicate the sex trade, and has members (survivors of the sex trade) from nations and governments all over the globe.

Formerly a visiting researcher at the University of Lincoln (2014–2017) and a former assistant director of the Research Centre on Violence, Abuse and Gender Relations at Leeds Metropolitan University, Bindel focuses a significant portion of his work on the topic of male violence against women and children, specifically in the areas of prostitution, stalking, religious fundamentalism, and human trafficking.

Around thirty book chapters and five volumes, including Straight Expectations (2014) and The Pimping of Prostitution, have been authored by Bindel alone or in collaboration with other authors (2017). Also, she is the editor of “The Map of My Life: The Story of Emma Humphreys,” which she did with her girlfriend, Harriet Wistrich (2003). She has consistently contributed articles to publications such as The Guardian, The New Statesman, The Spectator, and Standpoint.

During the 1990s, Bindel was the assistant director of the Research Centre on Violence, Abuse, and Gender Relations at Leeds Metropolitan University.
