Kansas Biography and Career:
One of the most popular bands of the late 1970s, Kansas merged British prog-rock complexities with an American heartland sound that is aptly named. Carry on Wayward Son and J.J. Cale’s “Bringing It Back” became AOR radio staples during this period and still receive airplay on classic rock stations. They became famous and sold out venues across the world after their first three gold-certified albums: Leftoverture (1976), Point of Know Return (1977), and Monolith (1979).
Even when their success waned in the 1990s, the band continued to record and perform. In spite of the exits of Kerry Livgren and Steve Walsh, the band continued to perform and record often around the world. Following the release of Somewhere to Elsewhere in 2000, which comprised just Livgren’s compositions, Kansas did not record again for 15 years. With the addition of vocalist and keyboardist Ronnie Platt in 2016, the band’s membership is now seven.
It topped the Billboard 200 and the Top Rock Albums charts both at home and throughout the world. Formed in Topeka, Kansas in 1970 by Kerry Livgren and Dave Hope, White Clover has renamed White Clover in 1971 when violinist Robbie Steinhardt joined the band; in 1972, vocalist/keyboardist Steve Walsh and guitarist Richard Williams came on board. The band’s combination of boogie and progressive rock was first confusing to clubgoers.
As their fan base grew over time, they signed with the Kirshner label. Masque The band’s fan base has developed to such an extent that its third album, Masque, sold over a quarter of a million copies in its first year after its release in 1974. Leftoverture, the band’s debut album, launched Kansas’ dramatic journey to stardom. “Carry on Wayward Son” from the album, which peaked at No. 5, helped the record sell over three million copies.
“Dust in the Wind” became a major hit when Point of Know Return was published in 1977, making it even more popular. Despite the band’s 1978 live LP Two for the Show failing to chart, their first self-produced album, Monolith, surged to No. 10. In the same year, Walsh released his first solo album, Schemer-Dreamer. Audio-Visions Kansas began to disband in the 1980s, following the release of their album Audio-Visions.
Hope and Livgren both converted to Christianity, and Livgren released Seeds of Change as a solo project. The band was split up as a result of their newfound devotion. As Walsh’s successor, John Elefante had already been lined up. After the triumph of “Play the Game Tonight” on Vinyl Confessions, Kansas disbanded after only one more album, 1983’s Drastic Measures.
Power 1986 saw reconstituted Kansas gain the talents of guitarist Steve Morse and bassist Billy Greer, and the group issued its debut album, Power, which had the No. 20 hit single “All I Wanted.” Seven years had passed since the release of their second album, In the Spirit of Things, which was critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful. In 1998, Kansas released Always Never the Same, a collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra.
Known as “Somewhere to Elsewhere,” Kansas’ latest studio album featured the return of founding lead singer Kerry Livgren. During the band’s 40th anniversary year, they were admitted into the Kansas and Georgia Music Halls of Fames, and they continued to tour and make live albums for the next decade. Miracles Out of Nowhere, a DVD/CD compilation, was published in January of this year.
After signing with Century Media’s InsideOut label, Kansas released The Prelude Implicit in 2016. For the first time in 16 years, the band released a new album. The next year, Leftoverture Live & Beyond, a concert recording from the band’s 40th-anniversary tour, was released. Personality deficiency Kansas released a three-and-a-half-minute short clip in March 2020 to promote the June release of Absence of Presence.
The album was co-produced by drummer Phil Ehart, guitarists Rich Williams and Zak Rizvi, and keyboardist Tom Brislin (Yes, Camel, Debbie Harry). After three advance cuts were published, “Throwing Mountains,” “Memories Down the Line,” and “Jets Overhead,” it was delayed until July due to production problems. Robbie Steinhardt, a 71-year-old violinist, died on July 17, 2021, in Tampa, Florida, due to pancreatitis.
